Chapter 11 - The Factory Behind the Lie.

The factory was located outside Baltimore.

On paper, it belonged to Northstar Biomedical Manufacturing.

In reality, ownership was divided among three shell corporations.

One traced back to Vanessa.

One traced back to Grant.

The third was harder to identify.

Daniel's forensic team worked through the night.

By morning, they found the beneficial owner.

Cynthia Holloway.

Emma stared at the report.

"She invested too."

Charles nodded grimly.

"Two-point-one million."

Emma called Cynthia again.

This time, Rebecca and Daniel were present.

Cynthia answered quietly.

"I expected you."

Emma spoke without emotion.

"Why do you own part of Northstar?"

"Grant told me it was an investment."

"Did you know what they manufactured?"

"Medical components."

"Did you know the components failed testing?"

"No."

"Did you ever visit the factory?"

"Once."

Emma closed her eyes.

"When?"

"Five months ago."

"Before or after you tried bribing Martin Shaw?"

Cynthia began crying.

"After."

Emma's voice remained steady.

"What did you see?"

"Assembly lines."

"Anything unusual?"

Cynthia hesitated.

"Some parts were being relabeled."

Daniel looked up sharply.

Emma asked, "Relabeled how?"

"I don't know."

"Cynthia."

"The boxes arrived with another company's name."

"What company?"

"I can't remember."

"Try."

Silence.

Then Cynthia said it.

"MedCore Pediatric Systems."

Charles stood abruptly.

MedCore was a legitimate manufacturer.

Its neonatal components were used internationally.

Emma understood immediately.

"They were counterfeiting MedCore parts."

Daniel was already writing.

Cynthia whispered.

"I didn't know."

Emma stared through the window.

"Maybe you didn't want to know."

She ended the call.

Federal investigators raided Northstar that afternoon.

They found boxes containing legitimate MedCore labels.

They found altered serial numbers.

They found unapproved materials.

They found discarded test reports.

Most importantly, they found a private office containing emails Grant believed had been deleted.

The fraud was larger than anyone imagined.

Hospitals had purchased components believing they came from established manufacturers.

Some had been installed in neonatal devices.

A nationwide recall began.

Emma watched the news in silence.

Noah rested against her chest during kangaroo care for the first time.

His body felt almost weightless.

She supported his head carefully.

His breathing was warm against her skin.

The television was muted.

Emma did not want him hearing Grant's name.

Rachel smiled from nearby.

"He likes being with you."

Emma looked down at her son.

"He knows his mother."

"He does."

Emma touched his tiny back.

"I wish I could protect him from everything."

Rachel's expression softened.

"That's every mother's impossible wish."

Emma smiled faintly.

Upstairs, Elise remained stable enough that doctors were discussing her first skin-to-skin session too.

Emma felt hope returning.

Then Rebecca entered.

She waited until Noah was safely back in his incubator.

"Grant's custody attorney made another filing."

Emma sighed.

"What now?"

"He claims Charles's influence over Beacon Crest creates an unsafe conflict."

Emma stared.

"Meaning?"

"He argues the children should be transferred to another hospital."

Emma's face changed immediately.

"No."

Rebecca nodded.

"We expected that reaction."

"Elise was unstable days ago."

"I know."

"No doctor is moving my babies for Grant's legal strategy."

"The medical team agrees."

Emma stood.

"What is he trying to accomplish?"

Rebecca hesitated.

"He claims you're using family ownership of the hospital to restrict his access."

Emma laughed in disbelief.

"He came once."

"His attorney says that's because he's uncomfortable being monitored."

"Good."

Rebecca's mouth almost curved.

"We'll respond."

The hearing was scheduled for the following morning by video because Emma refused to leave the twins.

Grant appeared beside his attorney from a conference room.

Emma appeared from Beacon Crest.

The judge listened carefully.

Grant's attorney argued that the Whitmore family's influence prevented neutrality.

Rebecca presented the medical evidence.

Then Dr. Sloan testified.

"Would transferring Noah or Elise be medically advisable?"

"No."

"Could it create unnecessary risk?"

"Yes."

Grant shifted in his chair.

The judge looked at him.

"Mr. Holloway, why do you believe transfer is necessary?"

Grant answered.

"I want my children somewhere both parents have equal standing."

The judge frowned.

"This is a hospital, not a country club."

Emma looked down to hide her reaction.

The judge continued.

"Your children require specialized neonatal care."

Grant nodded stiffly.

"I understand."

"Then why is your primary concern your standing?"

Grant had no good answer.

The transfer request was denied.

Supervised visitation remained.

Then Rebecca made a final request.

"Your Honor, given the ongoing investigation into Mr. Holloway's business activities involving neonatal equipment, we ask that he be prohibited from bringing any outside medical devices, supplies, or equipment into the NICU."

Grant's face went white.

The judge looked sharply at him.

"Is there a reason I need to issue such an order?"

Rebecca placed the Northstar search inventory into evidence.

Grant's attorney whispered urgently.

The judge read for several seconds.

Then she looked at Grant.

"Mr. Holloway."

Her voice had changed.

"It appears the products under investigation are specifically associated with neonatal respiratory care."

Grant said nothing.

The judge signed the restriction.

The hearing ended.

Emma expected to feel victorious.

She did not.

She looked at Noah.

Winning against Grant felt meaningless compared with one healthy breath.

Then Daniel entered with new information.

Investigators had identified another set of messages from Northstar.

One contained a delivery address.

Beacon Crest Medical Center.

Emma's stomach dropped.

May you like

The hospital had rejected Vantage.

But apparently, someone had sent the counterfeit equipment there anyway.
