Chapter 1: The Wedding That Stopped Breathing

Chapter 1: The Wedding That Stopped Breathing
The silence inside the ballroom stretched so long that even the violinists stopped playing.
More than four hundred guests turned toward the entrance.
Three small children stood proudly beside Mariana.
The identical twin boys, Ethan and Elijah, each wore miniature black tuxedos. Between them stood little Emily in a white dress, her tiny fingers wrapped around her mother's hand.
Ryan stared as though he had seen ghosts.
"No..." he whispered.
His eyes locked onto the boys.
They had his dark hair.
His sharp jawline.
Even the same tiny birthmark beneath the left ear that every Montgomery man carried.
Rebecca's champagne glass slipped from her hand and shattered across the marble floor.
"It... it can't be..."
Vanessa looked from Ryan to the children, her smile disappearing.
"Ryan..."
He couldn't answer.
His entire body had gone numb.
Mariana walked forward with calm confidence.
Gone was the broken woman he had abandoned three years earlier.
She wore an elegant navy gown, diamond earrings, and carried herself with quiet authority.
Behind her walked Alexander Whitmore.
Every influential businessman in the room immediately recognized him.
Whispers spread through the guests.
"That's Alexander Whitmore..."
"Why is he with her?"
"I thought Whitmore never attended weddings."
Ryan finally found his voice.
"Mariana..."
She stopped several feet away.
"You look surprised."
Rebecca stepped forward.
"You lied to us!"
Mariana slowly shook her head.
"No."
"I simply stopped telling the truth to people who no longer deserved to hear it."
Alexander handed an envelope to Ryan.
"You should read this."
Inside was a certified DNA report.
Ryan's hands trembled violently.
Probability of paternity...
99.9999%.
His knees nearly gave way.
"They're..."
"My children," Mariana answered calmly.
"And yours."
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.
Vanessa staggered backward.
"You told me she couldn't have children."
May you like
Ryan couldn't even look at her.
Because he had believed it himself.
