Chapter 8 - The Night Before the Wedding

Rachel had thought she was finished being shocked.
Kelly's message proved otherwise.
Ask him when it ended.
The words followed her through the afternoon.
They sat beside her during meetings with counsel.
They hovered over every financial document Maya reviewed.
They waited for her when she went home that evening and saw Daniel's tuxedo jacket still hanging over a chair.
Rachel stood in the bedroom doorway for a long time.
On Friday night, the night before the wedding, Daniel had told her he was staying at Noah's guest apartment with the groomsmen.
He said tradition mattered.
He said he wanted the first time he saw Rachel on Saturday to feel unforgettable.
Rachel had loved that.
Now she opened the location history from their shared family account.
She had never used it to monitor him.
The feature existed because Daniel had insisted it was safer when they traveled.
His phone location on Friday night showed the guest apartment until 11:47 p.m.
Then it went dark.
At 2:18 a.m., it reappeared.
Rachel sat on the edge of the bed.
She searched credit card activity.
His own card showed no charges.
Her authorized card showed a late-night ride service payment at 11:52 p.m.
Pickup: East 63rd Street.
Drop-off: The Mercer Hotel.
Rachel felt the room tilt.
The Mercer was where Kelly had stayed for the wedding.
She knew because Kelly had complained at brunch that the hotel flowers were "too aggressively minimalist."
Rachel called Daniel.
He answered immediately.
"Finally."
She heard airport noise behind him.
"Where are you?"
"Leaving Saint Lucia."
"With Kelly?"
"No."
That surprised her.
"Where is she?"
"I do not know."
Rachel almost laughed.
"You lose women quickly on honeymoons."
"Rachel, enough."
"Did you sleep with Kelly the night before our wedding?"
Silence.
Rachel closed her eyes.
There it was again.
The pause before the lie.
"No."
"You went to her hotel."
Daniel did not answer.
"Your phone disappeared from location sharing for two and a half hours. My card paid for the car."
"We had business to discuss."
Rachel laughed.
It came out broken.
"At midnight?"
"Yes."
"In her hotel room?"
"In the lobby."
"Then why turn off location sharing?"
Daniel's voice hardened.
"Because I knew how it would look."
Rachel stared at the wedding photo lying face down on the floor.
"How did it look, Daniel?"
"Stop."
"Tell me."
"Nothing happened."
"Kelly says I should ask when it ended."
The line went completely quiet.
Daniel's breathing changed.
Rachel felt a strange satisfaction at finally being the one who knew something first.
"What did she tell you?"
"I asked you a question."
"Rachel, listen to me. Kelly is trying to protect herself. She will say anything."
"Did you sleep with her?"
"Before you and I were serious."
Rachel's hand tightened around the phone.
"That is not what I asked."
Daniel spoke quickly now.
"There was a history. It ended."
"When?"
"A long time ago."
"When?"
He exhaled.
"After we got engaged."
Rachel stopped breathing.
Daniel continued before she could respond.
"It was complicated."
"How long after?"
"Rachel."
"How long after we got engaged?"
"A few weeks."
"A few weeks?"
"I ended it."
Rachel looked at her bare ring finger.
"Did Kelly agree it was over?"
Daniel did not answer.
"Did you?"
"I married you."
Rachel stood.
"That is not an answer."
"It should be."
"No. It used to be."
A boarding announcement sounded behind him.
Daniel lowered his voice.
"I am flying to New York."
"Do not come to the apartment."
"It is my home."
"It is my apartment."
"We are married."
"You keep hiding behind that sentence."
"Because you are acting insane."
Rachel became very calm.
"You forged my signature."
The words came out before she intended them to.
The line went silent.
No background noise.
No breathing.
Nothing.
Rachel realized instantly that she had revealed too much.
Daniel whispered, "What?"
She did not answer.
"Rachel, what did you just say?"
She ended the call.
Then she called Noah.
"I made a mistake."
He answered from his office.
"What happened?"
"I told Daniel I know about the forgery."
Noah cursed.
"How much did you say?"
"Only that sentence."
"Did you tell him we have a photo?"
"No."
"Did you mention the packet?"
"No."
Noah paused.
"Then it is recoverable."
Rachel walked to the closet.
Daniel's clothes occupied half the space.
She stared at them.
"He is flying back."
"Do not be alone when he arrives."
"I told him not to come here."
"That will not stop him."
Rachel knew Noah was right.
She called building security and removed Daniel from her guest authorization list.
Then she contacted her attorney about temporary access rights to the apartment.
For the first time that day, she felt a small sense of control.
It lasted nine minutes.
Maya called.
"Rachel, we found another transfer."
"How much?"
"It is not the amount."
"What is it?"
"Two hundred fifty thousand dollars from Daniel's company to a private intelligence contractor eight months ago."
Rachel frowned.
"For what?"
"The invoice says reputational due diligence."
"On who?"
Maya hesitated.
"You."
Rachel sat down.
"He investigated me?"
"The vendor name is Northstar Research Group."
Rachel had never heard of it.
Maya continued.
"Noah is pulling whatever records he can."
Rachel's phone buzzed with an email.
Unknown sender.
Subject: YOU SHOULD SEE WHAT HE BOUGHT.
There was one attachment.
A private intelligence report dated eight months before the wedding.
The cover page read:

Rachel stared at the title.
Then she opened it.
