Chapter 10 - The VerdictSix months later.

The courtroom was packed. The media had latched onto the story of the decorated Army Captain who had tortured his pregnant wife to steal her fortune. It was a circus, but I sat at the prosecutor's table with absolute stillness.

Leo was safe at home with a trusted nanny and a private security detail my father had hired.

Ethan sat at the defense table. He looked entirely different. The tailored suits were gone, replaced by an ill-fitting orange jumpsuit. He had lost weight, his hair was thinning, and his eyes darted around the room with paranoid, desperate energy.

When I was called to the stand, I didn't shake. I didn't look down. I walked to the witness box with my head held high, wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit.

For two hours, I dismantled Ethan’s lies.

I read from my journal. I showed the jury the photographs of my bruises. I played the secret audio recordings I had taken on my phone.

When Marcus Thorne tried to cross-examine me, attempting to twist my words and paint me as an emotional, vindictive woman, I didn't break.

“Isn’t it true, Mrs. Vance, that your pregnancy hormones made you prone to exaggeration?” Thorne asked smoothly.

I looked at him, then directly at the jury.

"My hormones did not put a handprint on my neck. My hormones did not lock me in a bedroom. My hormones did not gamble away half a million dollars and try to steal my mother’s estate to cover the debt. Ethan Vance did that."

The jury didn't even need a full day to deliberate.

"On the count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, we find the defendant... Guilty."

Ethan flinched as if he had been struck.

"On the count of Fraud... Guilty."

"On the count of Arson in the First Degree... Guilty."

"On the count of Attempted Murder... Guilty."

The judge, a stern woman with zero tolerance for domestic abusers, looked down at Ethan with pure disgust.

"Mr. Vance, you used your authority, your military standing, and the sacred trust of marriage to torment a vulnerable woman," the judge stated, her gavel resting heavily in her hand. "You are a disgrace to the uniform you wore. I hereby sentence you to forty-five years in the state penitentiary, without the possibility of parole. Furthermore, I am granting Claire Bennett full and sole legal custody of her child, and issuing a permanent, lifetime restraining order."

The gavel slammed down.

Bang.

It was over.

Ethan turned to look at me one last time as the bailiffs grabbed his arms to drag him away. He opened his mouth, perhaps to hurl one final threat, but no words came out. He saw the cold, unbreakable resolve in my eyes. He finally understood that he had lost completely.

I watched the doors close behind him, severing him from my life forever.

I walked out of the courthouse and into the bright Virginia sunlight. My father was waiting by the SUV. He didn't say a word; he just opened his arms.

I stepped into his embrace, taking a deep breath of the fresh, clean air.

I was Claire Bennett. I was a mother. I was a survivor.

And for the first time in a year, I was finally going home.
