Chapter 15 - Celeste's Choice.

Victoria escaped the Geneva building.

Not because she defeated the police.

Because she had prepared three escape routes before arriving.

By the time officers secured the service tunnel, she was gone.

Victor remained missing.

So did Celeste.

I blamed myself.

Dad blamed himself.

Rebecca blamed everyone equally.

That was probably healthiest.

The trust activation transformed the bankruptcy case overnight.

Hundreds of millions in protected assets became available for restructuring under independent stewardship.

Employee payroll stabilized.

Pension protections were funded.

Essential shipping operations restarted.

Nathan lost his greatest incentive for fighting me.

That should have weakened him.

Instead, it made him desperate.

He violated bail conditions by contacting a former executive.

The executive recorded the conversation.

Nathan wanted access to a private Ashford warehouse.

Not money.

Documents.

The same warehouse Graham had once used.

Investigators arrived first.

They found nothing.

Then Nathan disappeared.

His ankle monitor was discovered beside an abandoned car.

The media exploded.

Rebecca called me at 3:12 a.m.

“Nathan is officially a fugitive.”

I sat upright.

“How?”

“Someone helped him.”

“Victoria.”

“Probably.”

A message arrived while we spoke.

Unknown number.

Not Victoria.

Celeste.

I HAVE VICTOR.

ALIVE.

DO NOT TRUST NATHAN.

Rebecca traced the message unsuccessfully.

I responded once.

PROVE IT.

A photograph arrived.

Victor sat inside what looked like an office.

He was bruised but conscious.

Behind him was a large industrial window.

Through it, I could see shipping cranes.

“What port?” I asked.

Dad examined the image.

“Could be dozens.”

Rebecca enlarged a company logo reflected faintly in the glass.

ASHFORD MARITIME STORAGE.

There was only one active facility with that old branding.

Norfolk.

Federal teams moved.

Before they arrived, Celeste called me.

Her voice shook.

“I don’t have much time.”

“Where is Victoria?”

“Gone.”

“Nathan?”

“With her.”

“Why do you have Victor?”

“Because I took him.”

My anger exploded.

“You kidnapped him?”

“To keep Victoria from killing him.”

“That is not a defense.”

“I know.”

Celeste sounded exhausted.

“I stopped expecting forgiveness a long time ago.”

I almost hung up.

Then she said something that froze me.

“Nathan knows about the original recording.”

“What recording?”

“Your mother’s final private recording.”

“We saw it.”

“No.”

Celeste breathed.

“You saw the trust recording.”

“There’s another?”

“Yes.”

“What does it say?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then how do you know it exists?”

“Graham told me.”

The last recording was not in Geneva.

Katherine gave it to Charles Ashford before his death.

Charles hid it.

Victor knew where.

That was why Victoria kept him alive.

“What does Nathan want with it?”

“He thinks it proves your father ordered Charles’s death.”

I looked at Dad.

“That’s impossible.”

Celeste laughed bitterly.

“You’ve lived through enough impossible things.”

She was right.

“Where is Victor?”

“Norfolk.”

“Stay there.”

“I can’t.”

“Celeste.”

“If Nathan knows I betrayed Victoria, I’m dead.”

“You already betrayed everyone.”

“Yes.”

For the first time, her voice broke.

“That’s why nobody will come for me.”

I thought about the woman who counted my lashes.

The woman who smiled while Nathan hurt me.

Compassion felt offensive.

But justice was not the same as revenge.

“Keep Victor safe.”

Silence.

Then Celeste whispered.

“Why?”

“Because if you want one decision from your life to mean something, make it this one.”

She ended the call.

Federal agents reached the Norfolk facility seventeen minutes later.

Victor was there.

Alive.

Celeste was gone.

On the chair beside him sat a flash drive.

One file.

One message.

FOR HER.

I played it.

Celeste appeared on screen.

“If you are watching this, I finally did something without asking what I could gain from it.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“Victoria is taking Nathan to the last Ashford property Charles owned before he died.”

A location appeared.

An abandoned coastal estate in Maine.

Then Celeste said something I did not expect.

“I’m going there too.”

The screen went black.

Dad looked at me.

“No.”

I stood.

“Yes.”

“This ends without you.”

“No.”

I picked up my coat.

“It started with Nathan believing I had no voice.”

May you like

I looked at the coordinates.

“It ends with him hearing mine.”
