CHAPTER 1 — THE ICE DOESN’T KILL WHAT IT CANNOT HOLD

CHAPTER 1 — THE ICE DOESN’T KILL WHAT IT CANNOT HOLD
Inside Unit 7, the cold was no longer the worst part.
It was the silence Nathan believed would follow my death.
He stood just outside the freezer door, checking his watch.
“Forty minutes,” he muttered.
Miriam’s voice came through his phone on speaker. “She won’t last that long. No one does.”
Paige, my sister-in-law, laughed softly near the loading dock. “Honestly, I hope she suffers. She’s always acted like she’s better than us.”
Nathan exhaled, satisfied.
Then he locked the outer warehouse door and left.
But what he didn’t know—
I wasn’t alone inside Unit 7.
A thin seam of darkness near the far wall shifted.
A maintenance panel slid open from the inside.
And Donovan stepped in.
He wasn’t supposed to be there physically. His voice came through the earpiece hidden in my coat collar.
“Evelyn, you’ve got ninety seconds before the system resets the internal lock override. Are you ready?”
“I’ve been ready for two days,” I whispered.
My breath was steady now. Controlled. Measured.
Donovan’s calm voice guided me. “We’ve mirrored their cameras. Everything they’re doing is live on our feed. Nathan just left. Miriam is at her estate. Paige is still at the dock.”
“Good,” I said.
Because now they were exactly where I needed them.
The freezer’s emergency escape tunnel wasn’t just an exit.
It was a conduit—leading directly beneath HarborLock’s security hub.
Nathan thought he had sent me into a tomb.
He had actually sent me into the spine of his own system.
As I stepped into the maintenance corridor, frozen air gave way to industrial warmth.
Donovan’s voice softened slightly. “You still want to proceed with Phase Two?”
I paused.
For a moment, I remembered ten years of marriage.
The dinners.
The promises.
The life I thought was real.
May you like
Then I remembered the word murder spoken so casually behind a slightly open door.
“Yes,” I said. “Proceed.”
