Chapter 2 – The Basement Never Forgot

Chapter 2 – The Basement Never Forgot
Three days later...
I insisted on seeing the basement myself.
The police escorted me through the Carter estate.
Without Margaret.
Without Marcus.
Only Detective Lawson.
The basement door had been hidden behind an enormous bookshelf.
Inside...
Time had stopped.
Pink wallpaper.
Tiny stuffed animals.
A rocking chair covered in dust.
Every birthday...
Every Christmas...
Someone had left presents.
Unopened.
Seven birthdays.
Seven Christmases.
As if someone believed Lily would return.
On one wall hung hundreds of photographs.
Marcus's first wife.
Emma.
Holding a newborn.
Smiling.
Healthy.
Happy.
Nothing about those pictures suggested a dying baby.
Then I noticed something else.
Every picture after Lily turned three months old...
Was missing.
Only blank spaces remained.
Someone had deliberately removed them.
Detective Lawson carefully opened a locked wooden chest.
Inside lay dozens of journals.
Emma's handwriting.
The final entry made my blood run cold.
Marcus says Lily embarrasses his mother.
Margaret keeps calling her cursed.
Yesterday she asked whether institutions still accept disabled babies.
I'm terrified.
If anything happens to us...
It wasn't an accident.
The journal slipped from my hands.
Emma had known.
She had known they were dangerous.
But she had never escaped.
Then the forensic technician called from upstairs.
"Detective!"
"We found blood."
Old blood.
Hidden beneath freshly poured concrete.
No one spoke.
Everyone understood exactly what that could mean.
That afternoon...
The laboratory rushed DNA testing.
The blood matched...
Emma.
Not Lily.
Marcus's first wife had not died in a car accident.
She had died inside her own home.
And someone had buried the evidence.
Everything Marcus had told the world...
Was collapsing.
Meanwhile, Ethan refused to leave my side.
He sat beside my hospital bed holding his baby sister gently.
"Can I protect her?" he asked.
"You already did."
He smiled through tears.
"No."
"I mean forever."
I hugged him tightly.
"You don't have to protect us alone anymore."
"I'm your mother now."
May you like
For the first time since I'd known him...
He believed it.
