Chapter 1: The Sunrise Reckoning

Chapter 1: The Sunrise Reckoning
The morning sun filtered through the sheer silk curtains of the Whitmore estate, casting a golden glow over the master bedroom. Andrew Whitmore stirred, the lingering satisfaction of last night’s display of dominance still warming his chest. He reached over, expecting to feel the soft curves of Brenda. Instead, his hand met empty, cold sheets.
Downstairs, the atmosphere was anything but serene.
Margaret Whitmore stood in the grand foyer, her face flushed with a mixture of confusion and mounting rage. She held her platinum credit card in the air like a weapon, glaring at the luxury boutique courier standing awkwardly by the door.
"What do you mean it was declined?" Margaret’s voice reached a shrill pitch, echoing off the marble floors Mariana had meticulously chosen three years prior. "Do you know who I am? Run it again. Your machine is obviously defective."
"Ma'am, I've run it three times," the courier stammered, holding the velvet box containing a $50,000 diamond bracelet. "The bank specifically issued a code indicating the account is frozen."
At the top of the stairs, Andrew appeared in a silk robe, rubbing his temples. "Mother, keep your voice down. What is going on?"
Before Margaret could complain, Andrew’s phone began to vibrate violently in his pocket. It was his CFO, David. Andrew answered with an irritated sigh. "David, it’s 7:00 AM. This had better be an emergency."
"Andrew..." David’s voice was trembling. The background noise sounded like a war zone—phones ringing off the hook, people shouting. "It's gone. Everything."
Andrew frowned, his heart skipping a singular, icy beat. "What are you talking about?"
"The Vanguard accounts, the offshore holding trusts, the primary operating capital. It’s all been frozen or withdrawn. The subsidiary companies that were floating our debt just called in their loans. We’re in default, Andrew. The bank is seizing the company assets."
"That’s impossible!" Andrew roared, gripping the mahogany banister. "Our primary backer—Aegis Financial—they guaranteed our liquidity!"
There was a long, terrifying silence on the other end of the line.
"Andrew," David whispered, his voice cracking. "Aegis Financial isn't an independent firm. We just got the legal notices. It’s a shell corporation. It’s wholly owned by the Escalante Group."

The phone slipped from Andrew’s hand, clattering against the marble stairs. The name hit him like a physical blow. Escalante. Mariana’s maiden name. The name his mother had mocked for sounding like "cheap immigrant labor."
He looked toward the front doors, the exact spot where Mariana had stood the night before. Everything you believe belongs to you... exists because of me.
