Chapter 6 - The Woman in Blue.

Claire stared at the photograph of Lydia in the airport lounge until the pixels began to blur.

The message claimed Lydia had taken a deal.

Claire did not believe anonymous messages simply because they confirmed a fear.

Grant did.

"Looks like your witness reconsidered," he said.

His voice was almost gentle.

Claire looked across the boardroom.

"You seem relieved."

"I'm relieved when people stop participating in reckless attacks."

Daniel whispered that they needed to verify Lydia's location.

Claire nodded without taking her eyes off Grant.

Arthur Beck called a fifteen-minute recess.

The board members scattered into small groups.

Grant immediately pulled Victor Shaw aside.

Claire watched them speak beside the windows.

Victor owned a private-equity firm and held enough influence to turn three uncertain directors.

Claire had never trusted him.

Her father had once described Victor as a man who could smell weakness through concrete.

Daniel returned from the hallway.

"The photograph is real."

"Airport?"

"Yes."

"Destination?"

"Zurich."

Claire frowned.

"Lydia doesn't have family in Switzerland."

"Not that we can find."

Miriam approached with her phone pressed to her chest.

"There is something stranger."

Claire turned.

"Lydia bought the ticket yesterday afternoon."

Daniel stared at her.

"Before she contacted Claire."

"Exactly."

Claire felt the shape of the situation change.

If Lydia had planned to flee before the elevator incident, then last night's confrontation had not caused her departure.

Something else had.

"She knew something was coming," Claire said.

Miriam nodded.

"Or she was already part of it."

Claire thought about the flash drive in Daniel's pocket.

"We still have the metadata."

"Yes."

"Then she gave us something valuable before disappearing."

"Unless it's poisoned evidence."

Daniel's words landed heavily.

Claire looked toward Grant again.

He was smiling at Victor.

That smile felt too confident for a man whose finances had been frozen less than twelve hours earlier.

Before Claire could answer, her phone rang.

Vanessa Price appeared on the screen.

Claire stepped into an empty conference room and closed the door.

"Vanessa."

The woman on the other end was breathing fast.

"Did you put my name on a government list?"

"No."

"Someone called my accountant."

"That may have something to do with the twenty-two million dollars Grant tried to send to your company."

Vanessa made a small sound.

"I didn't know."

"I know you signed the corporate documents."

"He told me it was for consulting work."

Claire leaned against the table.

"Where are you?"

"I'm not telling you."

"Then why call me?"

There was a pause.

"Because I found something."

Claire waited.

"Grant left his second phone in the suite last night."

Claire's grip tightened.

"Second phone?"

"He always said it was for international clients."

"Do you have it?"

"Yes."

"Don't turn it on again."

"Too late."

Claire closed her eyes.

"What did you see?"

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Messages with someone saved as M."

Claire thought of Martin Hale.

"What kind of messages?"

"They were talking about you."

"Be specific."

"One said, 'She signs nothing after Friday.'"

Claire's skin went cold.

Vanessa continued.

"Another said, 'If she challenges the transfer, move to medical. The board will follow fear before facts.'"

Claire remembered Grant's presentation that morning.

The photographs.

The physician's vague statement.

The language matched exactly.

"Send screenshots."

"I already did."

Claire checked her messages.

Eight images arrived.

One of them contained a line that made her stop breathing.

Prepare custody narrative before liquidity event.

Claire read it twice.

"What does custody narrative mean?" Vanessa asked.

Claire thought of Nora.

"It means Grant was planning for more than a corporate fight."

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"Claire, I swear I didn't know about any of this."

Claire believed fear before she believed innocence.

"Where is the phone now?"

"With me."

"I need it."

"No."

"Vanessa."

"You don't understand."

Claire heard traffic in the background.

"Then help me understand."

Vanessa inhaled shakily.

"Grant knows I have it."

"How?"

"Because he called me from another number five minutes ago."

Claire straightened.

"What did he say?"

Vanessa went silent.

"What did he say?"

"He said if I loved the life he gave me, I should remember who paid for it."

Claire's mouth tightened.

"That's not an answer."

"Then he said I had thirty minutes to bring the phone back."

"And if you don't?"

Vanessa whispered.

"He said he'd tell everyone the offshore account was my idea."

Claire looked through the glass wall at Grant in the boardroom.

He was still laughing with Victor Shaw.

"Listen to me carefully."

Vanessa went quiet.

"Do not meet him alone."

"Why should I trust you?"

"You shouldn't."

Claire's answer surprised her.

"Trust the evidence instead."

She gave Vanessa Daniel's office address.

"Walk in with the phone, ask for Daniel Reed, and say the word bluebird."

Vanessa repeated it.

"Bluebird."

"They'll take you somewhere secure."

"Will you protect me?"

Claire looked at Nora's photo on her own lock screen.

"I'll protect the truth."

Vanessa ended the call.

When Claire returned to the boardroom, Grant's smile was gone.

He looked at her phone.

Then at her face.

"Who was that?"

Claire sat down.

"Someone you lied to."

For the first time, Grant looked genuinely uncertain.

Arthur called the meeting back to order.

Before he could speak, the boardroom doors opened.

Martin Hale entered with two attorneys.

He placed a sealed envelope in front of Arthur.

"I am invoking whistleblower protection," he said.

Claire felt every muscle in her body tense.

Grant's eyes hardened.

Martin looked directly at Claire.

"And I need to correct something I said yesterday."

He took a breath.

"Grant did not forge your signature."

The room went completely silent.

May you like

Martin continued.

"I did."
