Chapter 14 - Daniel Told the Whole Truth

Daniel requested another mediated meeting.

This time, he asked to speak before any financial discussion.

Rafael agreed.

Daniel entered carrying a folder.

He placed it on the table.

“I’m done lying.”

His attorney looked uncomfortable.

I said nothing.

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were printed messages.

Bank statements.

Emails.

Documents.

Some we had already seen.

Some we had not.

“My mother started talking about the hospitality business almost two years ago.”

He took a breath.

“I liked the idea.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I knew you would ask where the money was coming from.”

“And where was it coming from?”

“You.”

The word hung between us.

He looked down.

“At first, I told myself I deserved it.”

“Why?”

“Because I was your husband.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“I know.”

He rubbed his hands together.

“You were becoming successful.”

“I already was successful when we married.”

“I know.”

“Then what changed?”

“You kept growing.”

His eyes finally met mine.

“And I didn’t.”

I said nothing.

“I hated the way people introduced me.”

His voice was bitter.

“Mariana Rivera’s husband.”

I remembered those events.

I had always introduced him by name.

Always praised him.

Always made space for him.

It had never been enough.

“My mother noticed.”

Daniel continued.

“She told me I was becoming invisible.”

“And you believed her.”

“Yes.”

He looked ashamed.

“She told me the business would make me independent.”

“So you stole from the woman you wanted independence from.”

His face tightened.

“I know how that sounds.”

“It sounds accurate.”

He nodded.

Then he pushed another page toward me.

“This was my idea.”

I looked down.

The original loan draft.

“My mother wanted to use your apartment.”

He swallowed.

“I suggested using the company income too.”

Something cold moved through me.

“You suggested that?”

“Yes.”

His attorney whispered, “Daniel.”

He ignored him.

“I need to say it.”

Daniel looked directly at me.

“I signed your name.”

I already knew.

Hearing him admit it still hurt.

“Carmen told you to.”

“Yes.”

“But you did it.”

“Yes.”

“Why are you telling me now?”

His eyes became wet.

“Because Camila asked me last week if I was going to lie to her.”

I froze.

“What?”

“At visitation.”

He wiped his face.

“She spilled juice.”

“She got scared.”

“She asked if I was going to tell you she did it on purpose.”

I closed my eyes.

Daniel continued quietly.

“She thinks adults lie when children make mistakes.”

His voice broke.

“And I realized she learned that from us.”

No one spoke.

Then Daniel said something I never expected.

“I will accept supervised visitation as long as Dr. Herrera thinks it is necessary.”

His attorney turned toward him.

“Daniel.”

“I’m serious.”

He looked at me.

“I don’t want the apartment.”

He pushed the folder farther across the table.

“I don’t want the company.”

He paused.

“I want a chance to become someone Camila isn’t afraid of.”

I studied him.

Months earlier, those words might have pulled me back.

Now they didn’t.

Growth did not erase damage.

But growth still mattered.

“What about Carmen?”

He looked away.

“I moved my things out of her house.”

“You’re not living with her.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because every time I tried to admit what I did, she told me it was your fault.”

I nodded slowly.

“And?”

“And for the first time, I heard how ridiculous it sounded.”

I looked at Rafael.

He gave no reaction.

This was my decision.

“I’m not dropping anything.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

“The custody case continues.”

“I know.”

“The financial investigation continues.”

“I know.”

“And our marriage is over.”

His face changed.

That part still hurt him.

“I know.”

Then I picked up his folder.

“For Camila’s sake, I hope this is the first honest thing you finish.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“So do I.”

For the first time since the night of the seafood dinner, we left the room without arguing.

But the most difficult confrontation was still ahead.

May you like

Because Carmen had learned Daniel was cooperating.

And she was not prepared to lose control quietly.
