Chapter 11 - The Twelve Million Dollar Secret

The forensic accountants worked through the weekend.
By Monday morning, the picture was devastating.
Daniel had invested company funds in three private ventures without proper board approval.
Two had collapsed.
The third was under investigation for misleading investors.
Total losses exceeded eleven point eight million dollars.
Rebecca stared at the report.
“How did nobody see this?”
Lena answered.
“Because Daniel shifted losses between affiliated entities.”
Thomas added.
“And because people trusted him.”
Rebecca gave a humorless smile.
“I know that mistake.”
Margaret tapped one section.
“There may be criminal exposure.”
Rebecca looked up.
“Are you sure?”
“No.”
Margaret chose her words carefully.
“But there is enough here that the board will have to report certain transactions to regulators and auditors.”
Rebecca sat back.
She had wanted freedom.
She had wanted Daniel to face financial reality.
She had not wanted prison.
Thomas saw the conflict on her face.
“Rebecca.”
She looked at him.
“This isn't you doing this.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“I know.”
But knowing and feeling were different things.
Her phone rang.
Michael.
She answered.
“Hi.”
His voice sounded strange.
“Mom, Dad came to my dorm.”
Rebecca stood.
“When?”
“Ten minutes ago.”
“What did he want?”
“Money.”
Rebecca froze.
Michael continued.
“He asked me to transfer money from the education account.”
Rebecca's expression hardened.
“How much?”
“Two hundred thousand.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Relief moved through her.
“What did he say?”
Michael hesitated.
“He said you were freezing him out.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
Of course.
Even now, Daniel was rewriting the story.
“Where is he?”
“He left.”
“Michael, listen to me.”
Her voice became firm.
“Do not give him money.”
“I won't.”
“Do not sign anything.”
“I won't.”
“And if he comes back, call me.”
Michael was silent.
Then he asked.
“Mom, is Dad in serious trouble?”
Rebecca looked at the forensic report.
“Yes.”
“How serious?”
She hated what came next.
“Very.”
That evening, Daniel arrived at Rebecca's building.
Henry called upstairs.
“Mrs. Mercer, your husband is in the lobby.”
Rebecca looked toward Margaret.
Margaret shook her head.
Rebecca answered.
“Send him up.”
Daniel entered fifteen minutes later.
He looked ten years older.
His suit was wrinkled.
His eyes were bloodshot.
Rebecca remained standing.
“You asked Michael for money.”
Daniel's face tightened.
“I needed liquidity.”
“You asked our son to raid his education account.”
“He's graduating.”
“That isn't the point.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Rebecca, I made mistakes.”
She laughed softly.
“Mistakes?”
“Yes.”
“You hid another child for eleven years.”
Daniel stopped.
The blood left his face.
Rebecca watched his expression.
He did not ask what she meant.
He knew.
“Vanessa talked to you.”
Rebecca's eyes hardened.
“You don't get to say her name like she's the problem.”
Daniel looked away.
Rebecca continued.
“How many people have you lied to?”
Daniel said nothing.
“How many versions of yourself exist?”
Still nothing.
Rebecca stepped closer.
“I want one truthful answer.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?”
She held his gaze.
“Why did you throw me out when you knew your entire life was built on things I could expose?”
Daniel's face twisted.
“Because I thought you would never fight back.”
The room became silent.
Rebecca nodded once.
There it was.
May you like
The truth.
And somehow, it hurt less than all the lies.
