Daniel waited outside Elena's office.
Rain soaked his suit.
He looked nothing like the confident executive who had once ordered her out of the mansion.
When Elena finally stepped outside, he stood.
"Please... just five minutes."
She checked the time.
"You have three."
They sat in a quiet conference room.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
Elena remained silent.
"I convinced myself you needed me."
"You never did."
"I know."
"I thought success was mine."
"It never was."
He swallowed hard.
"I ruined everything."
"Yes."
"I would do anything to fix it."
Elena looked at him for a long moment.

His heart sank.
"You would do anything to erase the consequences."
There was a difference.
"I forgave you long before tonight."
Hope flashed across his face.
