Chapter 17 - The Woman Who Gave Daniel Away

Daniel called Rebecca Hale three weeks later.

He almost hung up before she answered.

I sat across the room.

He had asked me to be there.

“Hello?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Rebecca?”

“Yes?”

“My name is Daniel Carter.”

Silence.

Then a sound came through the phone.

A breath.

A sob.

“Oh my God.”

Daniel could not speak.

Rebecca did.

“I’ve waited thirty-eight years for this call.”

They talked for two hours.

Rebecca never claimed Margaret stole him.

She explained the truth.

She was nineteen.

Poor.

Alone.

Daniel’s biological father disappeared before his birth.

Richard and Margaret wanted a child desperately.

Rebecca chose them.

But she requested one condition.

Daniel should know where he came from when he became an adult.

Richard agreed.

Margaret did not.

For eighteen years, Rebecca sent birthday cards.

Margaret returned every one.

Daniel stared at the wall as Rebecca told him.

“Your father sent photographs sometimes.”

“Richard?”

“Yes.”

“He told me you were happy.”

Daniel wiped his eyes.

“I was.”

That answer surprised me.

It was also important.

Margaret had hurt him deeply.

But his childhood had not been entirely false.

People could love someone and still damage them.

That was perhaps the hardest truth of all.

Rebecca visited two months later.

She did not arrive like a replacement mother.

She arrived like a stranger hoping for permission to become something more.

Lily adored her immediately.

“You’re Daddy’s first mommy?”

Rebecca laughed through tears.

“I suppose I am.”

“Then Grandma Margaret was his second mommy?”

“Yes.”

Lily thought carefully.

“Families are complicated.”

Every adult in the room laughed.

“Yes,” I said.

“They are.”

Meanwhile, the criminal cases moved forward.

Dr. Vane accepted a plea agreement related to Richard’s death.

Jessica also negotiated a plea agreement.

She admitted falsifying the messages and tampering with Richard’s medication.

She received supervised restrictions while awaiting sentencing.

Mark filed for divorce.

But he refused to abandon Noah.

A second DNA test proved what Margaret already knew.

Mark was not Noah’s biological father.

When Jessica told him he could walk away, Mark shook his head.

“I’m the man who taught him to ride a bike.”

“I’m the man who stayed beside his hospital bed when he had pneumonia.”

“I’m the man he calls Dad.”

He looked at the DNA report.

“This tells me where his blood came from.”

“It doesn’t tell me who his father is.”

When Daniel told me that, I understood something.

Maybe the Carter men were finally learning what Margaret never had.

Family was not a percentage printed on laboratory paper.

DNA could establish truth.

It could protect Lily from a lie.

But love was proven by what someone did after the truth arrived.

And Daniel still had a long road ahead.
