Chapter 19 - Choosing Again

The ceremony took place in Claire's backyard.
Twenty people attended.
No photographers.
No elaborate decorations.
Emma picked the cake.
Lily picked flowers.
Claire officiated after obtaining the necessary authorization online, which she mentioned approximately forty times.
Rachel wore a simple blue dress.
Daniel wore a gray suit.
Before the ceremony, Rachel stood alone inside Claire's guest room.
The same room where she'd slept during Daniel's Boston trip.
The same house where her daughters had first gone for safety.
Claire entered.
"You ready?"
Rachel looked in the mirror.
"I think so."
Claire smiled.
"You've said that about everything for two years."
Rachel laughed.
"Maybe that's the point."
Outside, Daniel waited.
Emma stood beside him.
Lily scattered far too many flower petals.
Everyone laughed.
Rachel walked toward them.
She didn't feel like a bride starting over.
She felt like a woman arriving honestly.
Daniel spoke first.
"I can't promise we'll never fail each other."
Rachel's eyes filled.
"I can promise I won't disappear into work when things are hard."
He looked toward the girls.
"I can promise I'll listen earlier."
Rachel took a breath.
When her turn came, she looked at Daniel.
Then at Emma and Lily.
"I used to think being a good family meant hiding our worst moments."
Emma watched her carefully.
Rachel continued.
"Now I think being a good family means telling the truth before those moments define us."
She looked at Daniel.
"I choose honesty."
"Help."
"Boundaries."
"And you."
Daniel smiled.
They exchanged simple rings.
Everyone clapped.
Lily immediately asked about cake.
The afternoon became joyful chaos.
Emma danced with Daniel.
Lily ate frosting directly from a plate.
Rachel sat beside Claire.
"Do you think this is weird?"
Claire laughed.
"Extremely."
Rachel smiled.
"Good."
Later, Emma approached.
"Mom?"
"Yeah?"
"Can I ask something?"
"Always."
"Are you fixed?"
Rachel almost laughed.
"No."
Emma frowned.
"Then why are we celebrating?"
Rachel thought carefully.
"Because people aren't broken toys."
Emma listened.
"We're celebrating choices."
"What choices?"
"To keep doing the work."
Emma nodded.
"Okay."
Then she ran back toward the cake.
That evening, after everyone left, Rachel and Daniel returned home with the girls.
The kitchen was a disaster.
Cake containers.
Paper cups.
Flower petals.
Daniel surveyed the mess.
"This seems familiar."
Rachel gave him a look.
He immediately realized what he'd said.
"Sorry."
Rachel surprised him by laughing.
"No."
She looked around.
"It's okay."
Together, the family cleaned.
Lily dropped a cup.
Emma complained.
Daniel turned music on too loud.
Rachel asked him to lower it.
Nobody yelled.
Nobody hid.
Nobody listened from the stairs.
At ten thirty, the girls went to bed.
Daniel and Rachel sat at the kitchen table.
"Happy wedding day."
Daniel raised a glass of sparkling water.
Rachel clinked hers against it.
"Again."
They smiled.
Then Rachel noticed the frying pan hanging from the rack.
The black one.
She had eventually started using it again.
She pointed.
"Do you ever think about throwing that thing away?"
Daniel considered.
"Not really."
"Me either."
He looked toward her.
"Why?"
Rachel smiled.
"Because it's just a pan."
Daniel nodded.
Upstairs, Emma lay awake.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she'd eaten too much cake.
She heard her parents laughing downstairs.
Years earlier, noises from the kitchen had made her alert.
Now they made her sleepy.
She rolled over.
Lily was already asleep in the next room.
Everything was quiet.
Not the frightened silence that followed the eggs.
A peaceful silence.
A safe silence.
May you like
Emma closed her eyes.
For the first time in a very long time, nobody in the Bennett house was waiting for something bad to happen.
