Chapter 2: The Truth No One Could Erase

Chapter 2: The Truth No One Could Erase
I called my supervisor at Saint Vincent Memorial.
Not as a nurse.
As a frightened father.
Within twenty minutes, an old colleague connected me with a pediatric forensic physician and a child protection investigator.
They told me one thing.
"Do not confront her."
Instead, I brought Lumi to the children's advocacy center.
The doctors documented every bruise.
Some were fresh.
Others were weeks old.
One physician quietly closed the examination folder.
"These injuries are consistent with repeated physical abuse."
Lumi sat on the examination table swinging her tiny legs.
She wasn't crying anymore.
She looked relieved.
As if someone had finally believed her.
Later that afternoon, detectives searched the Victorian house.
Behind a loose wall panel inside Maris's bedroom closet, they found shredded medical records.
Burned photographs.
Letters from Child Protective Services.
And a notebook.
Every page contained dates.
Punishments.
How long Lumi cried.
How long she was forced to stand without moving.
How many meals she missed.
It wasn't discipline.
It was documentation.
Maris returned from her conference just before sunset.
Police vehicles already lined Birch Street.
She smiled confidently as she stepped from her car.
"What is all this?"
Then she saw Lumi holding my hand.
For the first time...
Her smile disappeared.
"You turned her against me."
"No," I answered quietly.
"You spent years doing that yourself."
She tried every excuse.
Lumi was difficult.
The doctors misunderstood.
The bruises came from accidents.
The papers were fake.
Then Detective Alvarez placed the recovered notebook on the hood of her car.
"You wrote this?"
Maris looked down.
Said nothing.
The silence answered everything.
As officers led her away in handcuffs, she screamed my name.
"You ruined my family!"
I looked toward Lumi.
She squeezed my hand.
May you like
"No," I said.
"I saved mine."
