Chapter 19 - Christmas Again

A year passed.

Christmas returned.

For weeks, I dreaded it.

I did not say that aloud.

Neither did my husband.

We decorated carefully.

No pressure.

No giant family gathering.

No traditions that felt like obligations.

Maisie chose the tree.

Ruby chose almost every ornament.

This resulted in seventeen glittering dinosaurs, three ballerinas, two spaceships, and a plastic taco hanging from the branches.

It was perfect.

On Christmas morning, the girls opened gifts in pajamas.

My husband made pancakes.

He burned the first batch.

I drank coffee and watched ordinary chaos fill the room.

At noon, snow began falling.

Ruby immediately wanted to build a snowman.

Maisie went quiet.

I noticed but did not ask.

Ten minutes later, she appeared wearing boots.

“Can we go?”

“Sure.”

We bundled up.

Outside, the air was sharp and clean.

Ruby threw the first snowball directly into her father’s chest.

He pretended to collapse.

She screamed with laughter.

Maisie smiled.

Then she walked toward the front porch.

I followed at a distance.

She stood beside the blue door.

For a long moment, she touched the frame.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Do you still feel bad?”

I knew exactly what she meant.

“For leaving you there?”

She nodded.

“Sometimes.”

She looked down.

“I don’t want you to.”

My throat tightened.

“I’m working on it.”

“You came when the hospital called.”

“As fast as I could.”

“And you believed me.”

“Immediately.”

She nodded as though completing some private calculation.

“Then you did the mom part.”

I laughed through tears.

“The mom part?”

“Yeah.”

“What’s the mom part?”

“Coming back.”

I had no answer.

She hugged me.

I held her under falling snow.

After a while, Ruby shouted from the yard.

“Stop hugging and help me!”

Maisie pulled away.

We returned to the snowman.

That evening, we ate dinner with Lauren and a few friends.

Samuel Ortiz came too.

I had contacted him months earlier.

The man who stopped his van had become an unexpected part of our lives.

Ruby called him Mr. Christmas.

He pretended to hate the name.

Everyone knew he loved it.

Before dessert, Maisie tapped her glass with a spoon.

She had prepared a speech without telling us.

“I want to say something.”

The room quieted.

“Last Christmas was bad.”

Nobody breathed.

“But this Christmas is good.”

She looked around the table.

“So I think Christmas gets another chance.”

Samuel wiped his eyes.

Lauren openly cried.

Ruby shouted:

“Cake!”

May you like

The room exploded with laughter.

And just like that, Christmas belonged to us again.
