Chapter 1: The Lie Begins to Crack
The ambulance arrived within minutes, but to me it felt like an eternity.
I held Sophie against my chest as paramedics wrapped a thick bandage around the side of her head. Blood still stained her flower-girl dress.
"Mom..." she whispered weakly. "Am I in trouble?"
Tears blurred my vision.
"No, sweetheart," I said, kissing her forehead. "You didn't do anything wrong."
Behind us, the wedding guests remained frozen.
No one applauded.
No one celebrated.
The bride's expensive reception had become a crime scene.
Then Preston spoke again.
"She's pretending," he sneered. "Kids exaggerate. She stole my phone, got caught, and now Evelyn's trying to make me look like the villain."
I slowly stood.
"You hit an eight-year-old with a solid oak board."
"I barely touched her."
The emergency physician looked directly at him.
"Sir, the child has a deep scalp laceration and likely suffered a concussion."
For the first time, whispers spread across the ballroom.
"Did he really hit her?"
"That was... way too hard."
"I thought she just fell."
But my parents rushed to protect him.
Richard Bennett stepped in front of Preston.
"My son simply reacted emotionally."
Carolyn nodded.
"If Evelyn had raised her daughter properly, none of this would've happened."
The paramedic stared at them in disbelief.
"You are talking about a bleeding child."
My mother didn't even look at Sophie.
Instead she adjusted her pearl necklace.
"We're talking about a thief."
That was enough.
I looked directly at the hotel manager.
"I want every security recording from tonight preserved."
The room became silent again.
Preston's confident smile disappeared for the first time.
"There won't be anything useful," he said too quickly.
The hotel manager frowned.
"Actually..."
He looked toward the ceiling.
"Our ballroom is covered by twelve security cameras."
I watched the color drain from Preston's face.
Just for a second.
Only a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
