Chapter 5 - The Video They Never Expected

The police officer moved faster than Diane.

He stepped between her and Emma.

“Ma’am, back up.”

Diane froze.

Emma clutched the tablet against her chest.

I had never seen my mother-in-law look frightened before.

Not embarrassed.

Not angry.

Frightened.

“Give me the tablet, sweetheart.”

My voice stayed calm.

Emma handed it to me.

I immediately sent the video to myself.

Then to Olivia.

Then to Tessa.

I wasn’t taking chances.

Diane watched every movement.

“You’re twisting a family conversation.”

I stared at her.

“I haven’t said what it means yet.”

“You know exactly what you’re doing.”

“Yes.”

For once, I did.

I collected the children’s clothes and left.

By late afternoon, Olivia had watched the entire video.

There was more.

Much more.

Emma had left the tablet propped on a bookshelf nearly twenty minutes before dinner.

The camera mostly showed a vase.

But the microphone captured conversations from the dining room.

Mark spoke quietly with Diane.

Jenna joined them.

I was in the kitchen.

They believed I couldn’t hear.

“The bank wants verification,” Mark said.

Diane answered.

“Then get her to sign the original.”

“She’s suspicious.”

“Because you act guilty.”

Jenna laughed.

“She never notices anything.”

My hands shook as I listened.

Then Mark said the sentence that changed everything.

“If she refuses, we move to the custody plan.”

Olivia paused the video.

“What custody plan?”

“I don’t know.”

We kept listening.

Diane’s voice came next.

“You’ve been documenting her behavior for almost a year.”

My skin went cold.

Mark answered.

“I have enough.”

Enough for what?

Then Jenna spoke.

“Once she’s out of the house, Mom can refinance it.”

Olivia stopped the recording again.

“That doesn’t make legal sense unless they believed they could establish some ownership claim or force a financial settlement.”

I barely heard her.

I was stuck on the earlier sentence.

Documenting her behavior.

For almost a year.

Suddenly dozens of memories returned.

Mark recording arguments.

Mark sending strange text messages after disagreements.

Mark asking whether I was “calm enough” to pick up the children.

Mark insisting I had screamed when I had only raised my voice.

Mark telling his mother I was exhausted and “unstable.”

I had thought he was being cruel.

Now I wondered if he had been building a file.

Olivia looked at me.

“Rachel, have you ever been diagnosed with anything that could affect custody?”

“No.”

“Any arrests?”

“No.”

“Substance issues?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Police calls?”

I hesitated.

“Once.”

Her expression changed.

“What happened?”

“Last year.”

I swallowed.

“Mark called the police during an argument.”

“Why?”

“He said I threw a glass at him.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

I had dropped a glass in the sink.

It shattered.

Mark claimed I had thrown it.

The officers believed it was a misunderstanding and left.

At the time, I was humiliated.

Now I understood.

It hadn’t been a misunderstanding.

It had been preparation.

Olivia sat back.

“They were building a narrative.”

“For custody?”

“Possibly.”

My phone buzzed.

A message from Mark appeared.

I know you’re angry.

Please do not drag the children into this.

Then another.

If you keep acting irrationally, I’ll have no choice but to protect them.

I stared at the screen.

A year earlier, that message might have terrified me.

May you like

Now it gave me exactly what I needed.

Proof.
