Chapter 3 - The Hospital Question

The examination room smelled like disinfectant and cold air.

Machines surrounded the bed.

A nurse attached monitors while another adjusted the screen beside me.

Ryan stood so close that his knee touched the mattress.

I watched the ultrasound monitor instead of anyone’s face.

A rapid heartbeat filled the room.

Fast.

Steady.

Beautiful.

I started crying.

Ryan closed his eyes.

Our daughter was alive.

Dr. Margaret Shaw entered a few minutes later.

She was a maternal-fetal medicine specialist with a calm voice and serious eyes.

“The heartbeat is reassuring.”

I nodded.

“Is she okay?”

“We’re seeing some uterine irritability.”

“What does that mean?”

“The impact stressed your body.”

She glanced at the monitor.

“We’re watching closely for contractions, bleeding, placental issues, or signs of early labor.”

Ryan asked the question I was afraid to ask.

“Could we lose the baby?”

Dr. Shaw did not give us false comfort.

“There is risk.”

My stomach tightened.

“But right now, she is stable.”

I squeezed Ryan’s hand.

The police arrived less than an hour later.

Detective Laura Greene introduced herself and asked whether I felt strong enough to answer questions.

Ryan looked at me.

I nodded.

I told her about the trust.

Grandmother Eleanor.

The meeting.

Vanessa’s anger.

The kick.

Then Detective Greene asked something unexpected.

“Did anyone in your family know the exact conditions of the trust before today?”

“I don’t think so.”

Ryan interrupted.

“My wife’s father did.”

I turned toward him.

“What?”

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

“Your grandmother’s attorney mentioned at the funeral that your father had requested copies of previous estate documents.”

My heart sank.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t know it mattered.”

Detective Greene wrote something down.

“Who is the attorney?”

“Thomas Harlan.”

She nodded.

“We’ll speak with him.”

Then she showed us a still image from Ethan’s video.

Vanessa stood three feet away from me.

My mother was behind her.

My father was near the patio.

The timestamp was visible.

Detective Greene enlarged the image.

“Your cousin’s recording also captured audio.”

Ryan leaned forward.

The detective played it.

Vanessa’s voice came through quietly.

“Is this enough?”

My mother answered.

“We’ll talk later.”

Then Vanessa stepped toward me.

Three seconds afterward, she kicked me.

I felt the room tilt.

Ryan became completely still.

“What does that mean?”

Detective Greene did not speculate.

“That’s what we’re investigating.”

Another contraction appeared on the monitor.

Dr. Shaw returned.

“You need to stay calm.”

I almost laughed.

“My sister just attacked me and apparently asked my mother if it was enough.”

“I understand.”

“No.”

My voice cracked.

“I don’t think anyone understands.”

Detective Greene closed her notebook.

“We’re going to find out.”

Before leaving, she paused at the door.

“There’s something else.”

Ryan looked at her.

“What?”

“Your father attempted to take Ethan’s phone before officers arrived.”

“I saw that.”

“And your mother removed documents from the table.”

“We saw that too.”

Detective Greene nodded.

“One of those documents is now missing.”

My pulse increased.

“Which one?”

She looked directly at me.

“The page explaining what happens to the trust if your daughter is not born alive.”
