Chapter 5 - Vanessa's Second Phone.

Vanessa chose a coffee shop in SoHo where nobody from my office was likely to see us.

That was the first sign something had changed.

For six months, she had loved being seen with me.

She liked restaurants where tables were difficult to reserve and hotel bars where someone might recognize my name.

That afternoon, she sat in the darkest corner wearing sunglasses indoors.

"You look terrible," she said.

I slid into the chair across from her.

"My wife left with my son."

Vanessa removed the sunglasses.

"I know."

"How?"

She looked toward the window.

"Mason told me."

My anger sharpened instantly.

"Why is my CFO discussing my marriage with you?"

"Because your CFO has been discussing you with me since before you and I ever spent a night together."

The sentence made no sense.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa reached into her handbag and pulled out a second phone.

I had never seen it before.

It was small, black, and cheap.

"What is that?"

"The phone Mason gave me for work."

"What work?"

She looked at me like I was being deliberately slow.

"Northstar."

I leaned back.

"You do not work for Northstar."

"I did."

"Doing what?"

"Client relations, events, research, whatever Mason needed."

"Since when?"

"Last summer."

That was two months before I met her at a venture-capital dinner in Tribeca.

Mason had introduced us.

I remembered it clearly.

He had walked Vanessa over with his hand lightly at her elbow.

Ethan, meet Vanessa Cole.

She's smarter than half the people in this room and twice as dangerous.

We had all laughed.

"You told me you were an independent brand consultant."

"I was."

"And Northstar?"

"One of my clients."

"Mason owns Northstar?"

"Not officially."

A pressure formed behind my eyes.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa unlocked the second phone and opened a thread of messages.

The contact name was simply M.

She handed it to me.

The first messages were routine.

Confirm the dinner reservation.

Move the sponsor meeting to Friday.

Send the revised guest list.

Then I reached September.

A message from Mason read, Ethan Carter will be at the Halcyon dinner.

Make sure he meets you.

Another followed.

He likes people who make him feel less married.

I read it twice.

"What is this?"

Vanessa's face tightened.

"I thought it was a joke."

"Did you?"

"At first."

"And later?"

She did not answer.

I scrolled.

There were messages from October.

Keep him out tonight if you can.

Need him relaxed before tomorrow's finance call.

Then November.

Use the Northstar card for the suite.

Do not put your name on the invoice.

Then December.

He signed the bridge package.

Good work.

I stopped breathing for a second.

"What bridge package?"

Vanessa looked down.

"I don't know."

"Do not lie to me."

"I am not lying."

"You knew Mason was paying for our hotels."

"Sometimes."

"Why?"

"He said they were client-development expenses because you were working most of those evenings anyway."

I laughed once, without humor.

"Working?"

"Ethan, I didn't submit the invoices."

"You used the card."

"Because you told me your company covered entertainment."

She was right.

I had said that.

I had liked making the rules sound flexible because it made me sound important.

"How much?"

"I don't know."

"How much did Northstar pay for us?"

"Maybe thirty thousand."

My stomach turned.

"Maybe?"

"Across hotels, dinners, cars, events."

"You let me think I was paying."

"Sometimes you were."

"And when I wasn't?"

"Mason said he would reconcile it."

I took out my phone and called him.

Vanessa reached across the table.

"Don't."

I ignored her.

Mason answered immediately.

"Where are you?"

No hello.

No question about Claire.

"With Vanessa."

Silence.

"Why?"

"She showed me the Northstar phone."

Another silence.

Longer this time.

"You need to come to the office."

"Did you route hotel bills through Northstar?"

"Not on an open line."

"This is my phone."

"Exactly."

His voice dropped.

"Come to the office."

"Did you do it?"

"Ethan, your company has bigger problems today than your marriage."

The phrasing sent a chill through me.

"What happened?"

"Harbor Meridian contacted the board."

"About the guarantee?"

"About everything."

Vanessa watched my face.

"What does that mean?"

Mason exhaled.

"It means the independent directors called an emergency meeting for four o'clock."

I looked at the clock above the counter.

It was 3:18.

"They cannot do anything without me."

"They can suspend you."

"They won't."

Mason did not answer.

That silence told me he thought they might.

"Be there in thirty minutes," he said.

The call ended.

Vanessa held out her hand for the second phone.

I did not give it back.

"I need this."

"No."

"It proves Mason was moving expenses."

"It also proves I was involved."

"So you knew enough to be worried."

"I knew enough to realize I was stupid."

I almost laughed at the irony.

"Welcome to the club."

Her face hardened.

"Do not compare us."

"Why not?"

"Because I didn't have a wife at home with a newborn."

The words hit harder because Vanessa said them.

I stood.

"You were happy to be the reason I wasn't there."

"No."

She looked at me with something that resembled shame.

"I was happy to be chosen."

She paused.

"I didn't ask who was being abandoned so I could feel that way."

I left before she could say anything else.

The elevator ride to Carter Ridge's office took forty-two seconds.

By the time the doors opened, every screen in the lobby had gone dark except one.

My assistant was standing beside it with tears in her eyes.

"Mr. Carter."

"Where is everyone?"

She looked toward the main conference room.

Through the glass, I could see six board members seated around the table.

Martin was there.

So was Mason.

At the head of the table sat a woman I recognized from Harbor Meridian's legal department.

My assistant handed me an envelope.

The first line read NOTICE OF TEMPORARY ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE.

I looked through the glass at Mason.

He would not meet my eyes.

Then I noticed the folder in front of him.

Northstar Strategy Group.

May you like

And for the first time, I understood that Claire's evidence had not simply followed me home.

It had reached my company before I did.
