Chapter 1

CHAPTER 2: THE LETTERS

Three days later, I sat across from Vivian in a private conference room.

Neither of us knew where to begin.

Between us sat a worn cardboard box.

Inside were the letters.

Some yellowed with age.

Some unopened.

Some addressed to Vivian.

Some addressed to me.

My hands shook as I picked up the first envelope.

It was dated fourteen years ago.

One year after Sarah's death.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Dear Dale,

If you're reading this, then something happened exactly the way I feared it would.

I had to stop reading.

The room blurred.

Vivian silently pushed a glass of water toward me.

I continued.

There are things I never told you.

Not because I didn't trust you.

Because I was trying to protect everyone.

Especially you.

My pulse raced.

The letter explained everything.

Sarah had come from one of the wealthiest families in Illinois.

Her father controlled a manufacturing empire worth hundreds of millions.

When she fell in love with a mechanic named Dale Brennan, he considered it an embarrassment.

A scandal.

He demanded she leave me.

Instead, she left him.

Forever.

For years, she cut all contact.

Built a new life.

Created a new identity.

Married me.

Had Danny.

And never looked back.

Until she became sick.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

After my diagnosis, I secretly contacted Vivian.

I stared at the page.

Across the table, Vivian was already crying.

Sarah had known she was dying.

Known years before we admitted it out loud.

And she had made plans.

Careful plans.

For Danny.

For me.

For everyone she loved.

Including a younger sister she had never stopped caring about.

There were dozens of letters.

One for every year.

Instructions.

Advice.

Birthday messages.

Graduation wishes.

Wedding congratulations.

Even letters meant for grandchildren she would never meet.

My wife had spent her final months building a bridge across time.

And somehow...

one little boy named Eli had been the first person to find it.

That night I sat alone in my apartment reading until sunrise.

The final letter was addressed to Vivian.

Only one sentence was underlined.

If Dale ever needs help, help him the way he helped me.

I thought that was the end.

I was wrong.

Because folded inside that last envelope was something else.

A medical document.

One I had never seen before.

And at the bottom was a name.

A name that made my blood run cold.

Richard Cole.

Vivian's father.

The man who had paid for Sarah's treatment.

May you like

Anonymously.

For years.
