Chapter 2 - The House of CardsThe shift in power was so absolute, it was almost suffocating.

Less than five minutes ago, Richard had been holding court, surrounded by sycophants, convinced he was a god in his own backyard. Now, he was trapped in a nightmare he couldn't comprehend.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard shrieked, his voice cracking violently. He took a step toward the tactical commander. "I am Richard Vance! Do you know who I am? This is an illegal occupation of private property! Chief Miller, do your damn job!"

Chief Miller didn't move. He was staring at the red laser dot resting squarely on the center of his chest.

Two operatives had flanked the chief, their weapons raised.

"Officer," one of the operatives said, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "Slowly remove your hand from your duty belt. Use your left hand to unbuckle the rig and let it drop."

"I'm... I'm the Chief of Police," Miller stammered, sweat pouring down his forehead. "I have jurisdiction—"

"You have zero jurisdiction," the operative interrupted. "Drop the belt, or you will be neutralized as a threat."

Miller swallowed hard. His hands shook wildly as he unbuckled his gun belt. It hit the grass with a heavy thud. An operative immediately kicked it away and zip-tied Miller’s hands behind his back, forcing the heavy man to his knees.

Richard watched his personal attack dog get muzzled in a matter of seconds. Panic finally set into his eyes.

"Arthur!" Richard's mother screamed. She was standing by the patio steps, her diamond necklace glittering in the sun, clutching a ruined silk shawl. "Arthur, what have you done? Call them off! We are respectable people!"

I ignored her. I turned to the tactical commander. "Call sign?"

"Echo-Actual, sir," the commander replied.

"Echo-Actual. The girl in the truck is the VIP. Secure the perimeter around the vehicle. No one approaches except your medic."

"Understood." The commander hand-signaled to four of his men. They instantly broke off, forming a tight, protective diamond formation around my rusted pickup.

I walked past Echo-Actual and headed straight for the living room doors.

"Hey! You can't go in there!" Richard yelled, lunging toward me.

He didn't make it two steps.

An operative stepped into his path, slamming the reinforced butt of a rifle directly into Richard's sternum. All the air left Richard's lungs in a violent whoosh. He collapsed onto his manicured lawn, wheezing and gasping for breath, his expensive silk shirt stained with dirt.

I stepped over him and walked into the mansion.

The crime scene.

It was exactly as I left it, save for the fact that a tactical team was now securing every exit. I walked over to the white, blood-stained rug. I knelt down and reached beneath the edge of the leather sofa.

My hand brushed against the cold metal casing of Lily's cracked phone.

I pulled it out. The screen was still illuminated. The voice recorder app was still ticking. It had been recording for forty-two minutes.

I hit 'Stop' and saved the file.

"Looking for this?" I asked, turning around.

Richard had managed to stumble into the doorway, clutching his chest, supported by two operatives who were holding his arms in a pain-compliance hold.

He looked at the phone in my hand. He recognized it. The pink case. The cracked screen.

"She dropped it when you hit her," I said, my voice eerily calm. "It’s been recording everything. Every threat. Every brag. Every confession you made about bribing the judges, about paying off Miller. About how you thought no one would ever believe her."

Richard's face turned ash gray.

"That... that's inadmissible," he choked out. "Illegal recording. Two-party consent state. My lawyers will have it thrown out."

"You're right," I nodded slowly. "In a normal court, under normal circumstances, a hotshot lawyer might get this excluded."

I walked slowly toward him, stopping inches from his face.

"But you aren't going to a normal court, Richard. You aren't dealing with the local district attorney. I initiated a Code Black. Do you know what that means?"

He didn't answer. He was breathing heavily, terrified of the man standing in front of him.

"It means," I whispered coldly, "that you are now classified as a domestic terror threat. Your assets are currently being frozen by the Treasury Department. Your hard drives are being seized by federal cyber units. You don't get a phone call. You don't get a lawyer. For the next seventy-two hours, you belong to the United States Government in a black site facility."

"You can't do this!" Richard screamed, thrashing against the operatives holding him. "I'm an American citizen! I have rights! I have money!"

"You have nothing," I corrected him.

I looked at the commander. "Echo-Actual. The recording on this device confirms a conspiracy to corrupt local law enforcement, racketeering, and severe physical assault on the VIP. Bag it. Evidence chain starts now."

"Yes, sir," the commander said, producing an anti-static evidence bag. I dropped the phone inside.

"Take the house apart," I ordered, my eyes scanning the lavish living room. "Tear open the walls. Rip up the floorboards. Crack the safes. I want every ledger, every hidden hard drive, every dirty secret this coward thought he could hide."

The commander tapped his radio. "Breach teams, execute."

Within seconds, the sound of sledgehammers and pry bars echoed through the mansion. Operatives began systematically destroying the beautiful, pristine illusion Richard had built. Paintings were ripped from walls. Drywall was smashed open. The sound of shattered glass and splintering wood filled the air.

Richard watched in absolute horror as his empire was physically dismantled before his eyes.

"Stop them!" his mother shrieked, falling to her knees on the patio. "You're ruining everything! Our legacy!"

"Your legacy," I said, stepping back outside, "is a coward who beats women."

I didn't give them another glance. I walked back to my truck.

The military medic had already set up a field kit on the hood. He was checking Lily's vitals, shining a penlight into her unswollen eye.

I opened the passenger door. Lily looked at me. The terror was slowly fading from her face, replaced by absolute shock. She looked at the helicopters. She looked at the armed men. Then, she looked at me.

"Dad..." she whispered, wincing as her split lip stretched. "Who... who are these people?"

I gently brushed a stray lock of hair from her forehead, my hand steady, my voice softer than it had been in fifteen years.

"Just some old friends, sweetheart," I said. "I told you. Nobody hurts my little girl."
