Chapter 2: A Promise Worth More Than Any Wedding

Chapter 2: A Promise Worth More Than Any Wedding
The ballroom disappeared behind us.
Outside, the afternoon sun felt warmer than it had all day.
Chloe looked up at me.
"Daddy..."
"Are you sad?"
I smiled honestly.
"I thought I would be."
"But right now..."
I squeezed her tiny hand.
"...I'm mostly grateful."
She tilted her head.
"For what?"
"For finding you before I made the biggest mistake of my life."
Tears welled in her eyes again.
"I didn't want to ruin your wedding."
"You didn't."
"You saved me from it."
We drove home without saying much.
That evening we ordered pizza.
Still wearing our wedding clothes.
Chloe laughed when tomato sauce landed on my tuxedo.
For the first time in months...
our house felt peaceful.
Later that night, my sister Emily arrived carrying a small gift bag.
Inside was a framed copy of Chloe's letter.
"I scanned it before the paper got damaged," Emily said softly.
"You'll want this forever."
She was right.
I hung it above my desk the very next morning.
Not because it reminded me of heartbreak.
Because it reminded me what truly mattered.
A week later, Rachel called.
Again.
And again.
Eventually she left one final voicemail.
"I made a mistake."
"I was stressed."
"I never meant for this to happen."
I listened once.
Then deleted it.
Some choices couldn't be explained away by stress.
Especially the ones that hurt children.
Life slowly returned to normal.
Chloe started second grade.
We planted flowers together in the backyard.
Every Friday became our movie night.
Every Sunday became pancake morning.
Little traditions.
Simple moments.
The kind I'd almost sacrificed without realizing it.
One evening Chloe climbed onto the couch beside me.
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"If you ever get married again..."
I looked at her.
She smiled nervously.
"...can I stand next to you?"
I kissed the top of her head.
"No."
She blinked.
"No?"
I grinned.
"You won't stand next to me."
"You'll stand with me."
"Because anyone who joins this family..."
"...has to love every part of it."
She wrapped her arms around me.
May you like
"I like that."
"So do I."
