Chapter 1 – The Girl Who Remembered a Lullaby

Chapter 1 – The Girl Who Remembered a Lullaby

The next morning, Ethan Brooks couldn't get the homeless girl out of his mind.

He canceled three meetings.

His assistant, Laura, stared at him in disbelief.

"Sir, the board has been waiting for two weeks."

"They can wait another hour."

Instead of heading to Brooks Global, Ethan drove back beneath the old Riverside Bridge.

The cardboard shelter was gone.

Only a worn-out teddy bear remained.

His heart sank.

"She left..."

He searched every nearby street until an elderly woman selling flowers pointed toward a small church.

"The little girl?" she asked softly.

"She sleeps there when it rains."

Ethan hurried inside.

The church was quiet.

Candles flickered beneath stained-glass windows.

Curled up on a wooden bench, the little girl slept peacefully with the teddy bear in her arms.

For the first time, Ethan saw how thin she really was.

Her shoes didn't match.

Her jacket had been sewn together dozens of times.

She looked no older than eight.

When she finally opened her eyes, she smiled.

"You came back."

"I promised."

She hesitated.

"Nobody ever comes back."

Those words pierced deeper than any accusation.

Ethan bought her breakfast.

She devoured pancakes, eggs, and hot chocolate as if she hadn't eaten properly in weeks.

"What is your name?" he asked.

"Emma."

"Do you know your last name?"

She shook her head.

"I only remember my mommy calling me her little star."

As they talked, Emma quietly hummed a lullaby.

Ethan froze.

His mother used to sing that exact melody every night.

Only one family had ever known that song.

His own.
