Chapter 1: The Camera That Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Camera That Changed Everything

The moment I mentioned CCTV, something shifted in the room.

Preston’s confidence flickered—but only for a second.

Then he laughed.

A short, sharp sound.

“You think a security camera will save you?” he said, adjusting his cufflinks like nothing had happened. “Evelyn, you’re delusional.”

My mother nodded immediately, as if she had been waiting for permission to dismiss me.

“Security footage can be edited,” she said coldly. “Or misinterpreted.”

My father added, “Let’s not escalate this further.”

But the sirens outside were no longer distant.

They were close.

Too close.

Sophie whimpered in my arms, her blood staining my dress, my hands trembling as I pressed a napkin against her wound.

Then the hotel manager rushed in, pale-faced, followed by two police officers.

“Who called emergency services?” one of them asked.

“I did,” I said firmly. “My daughter was assaulted.”

Preston immediately stepped forward.

His voice softened into practiced charm.

“I am the groom. There’s been a misunderstanding. A child stole from me, and things got out of hand.”

The officer looked at Sophie.

Then at the blood.

Then at the broken wooden menu board still lying near the aisle.

“Sir,” the officer said slowly, “we’ll need everyone to stay where they are.”

For the first time, Preston didn’t look in control.

He looked… watched.
