Chapter 16 - North Harbor

Nobody allowed Rachel to go alone.

She went anyway.

At least, she appeared alone.

Pierce positioned agents around the abandoned warehouse district.

Daniel remained several blocks away.

Rachel entered a rusted building near the waterfront.

Wind moved through broken windows.

“Evan?”

Nothing.

She walked deeper.

“Evan Collins?”

A figure stepped from behind a concrete column.

Evan looked exhausted.

His suit was wrinkled.

His face unshaven.

“You brought people.”

Rachel stayed calm.

“You expected me not to?”

“I said alone.”

“You stole millions from me.”

Evan almost laughed.

“Fair.”

He held a hard drive.

“This is everything.”

Rachel did not move.

“Why give it to me?”

“Because Helena plans to destroy me.”

“You deserve each other.”

“Yes.”

Evan looked toward the windows.

“But I prefer prison to whatever Helena has planned.”

Rachel studied him.

“You think she's going to kill you?”

“No.”

He laughed nervously.

“Helena doesn't need violence.”

“She destroys reputations.”

“Creates evidence.”

“Moves money.”

“By the time authorities arrive, you look guilty for crimes you never knew existed.”

Rachel thought of her divorce.

“She did that to Daniel and me.”

“Yes.”

The admission hurt.

“You knew?”

Evan lowered his eyes.

“I helped.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

Rachel waited.

“No tragic explanation?”

“My father wasn't sick.”

“I wasn't threatened.”

“I wanted money.”

Rachel almost respected the honesty.

Almost.

Evan held out the drive.

“Helena's original records are here.”

“Payments.”

“Instructions.”

“Fake entities.”

“Everything.”

Rachel took one step.

Then headlights flashed through broken windows.

Evan went pale.

“No.”

A vehicle entered the warehouse.

Helena stepped out.

Alone.

She clapped slowly.

“I am genuinely disappointed.”

Evan backed away.

“How did you find me?”

Helena smiled.

“You're predictable.”

Rachel remained still.

Helena looked at her.

“You too.”

“Then you knew I would come.”

“Yes.”

Helena glanced toward the building.

“And I know Daniel isn't far away.”

Rachel's pulse quickened.

Helena held up her phone.

“Tell him to stay where he is.”

“Why?”

“Because I sent someone to watch Ellie.”

Rachel's expression hardened.

“You're lying.”

“Probably.”

Helena smiled.

“Want to test it?”

Rachel touched her hidden microphone.

Pierce immediately understood.

Agents were already checking.

Helena walked closer.

“You could have taken eighty million.”

“I didn't want your money.”

“You wanted righteousness.”

“No.”

Rachel looked at Evan.

“I wanted the truth.”

Helena laughed.

“Truth is overrated.”

“People believe whatever arrives first.”

“You proved that when your marriage collapsed.”

Rachel felt the hit.

Helena continued.

“You both believed the worst about each other with almost no evidence.”

“That was your greatest weakness.”

Rachel nodded.

“You're right.”

Helena looked surprised.

Rachel continued.

“We were young.”

“Exhausted.”

“Proud.”

“And stupid.”

She smiled faintly.

“But you made one mistake.”

“What?”

“You thought people never change.”

Helena's smile faded.

Rachel looked toward the entrance.

Daniel stepped inside.

Helena's expression turned dangerous.

“I told you—”

“Ellie is safe.”

Pierce's voice came from behind Daniel.

Federal agents entered from multiple sides.

Helena turned.

Evan raised both hands.

“I'll cooperate.”

Helena stared at him with contempt.

“Coward.”

“Yes.”

He handed Pierce the drive.

Helena remained strangely calm.

One agent approached.

“Helena Vale, you are under arrest on suspicion of wire fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and obstruction.”

Helena looked at Rachel.

“This isn't finished.”

Rachel shook her head.

“Yes.”

“It is.”

Agents led Helena away.

For the first time in years, Rachel felt something release inside her chest.

Daniel approached.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You shouldn't have come alone.”

“I wasn't alone.”

“You walked into an abandoned warehouse.”

“With federal agents outside.”

Daniel laughed despite himself.

“You haven't changed.”

Rachel looked at him.

“I've changed a lot.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“You have.”

Outside, dawn light reflected across North Harbor.

Old warehouses stretched toward the river.

Cranes stood in the distance.

Daniel looked at the property.

“Still want to build this?”

Rachel followed his gaze.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Different.”

“Different from what?”

“Not just luxury towers.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“That was the plan.”

“I know.”

“And?”

“I own the roads.”

Daniel laughed.

“You're enjoying this.”

“Very much.”

Rachel looked toward the waterfront.

“Housing.”

“Parks.”

“Schools.”

“Commercial space.”

“Places regular families can actually use.”

Daniel considered.

“That reduces returns.”

“Yes.”

“You really are going to make me regret discovering your shares.”

Rachel smiled.

“Almost certainly.”

Daniel looked at her.

Then something warm passed between them.

Familiar.

Dangerous.

Rachel looked away first.

“We should go home.”

Daniel nodded.

“To Ellie.”

May you like

That word meant more than either admitted.

Home.
