Chapter 8 - Elena Comes Home.

Elena Hale arrived at headquarters at 9:24 a.m.

She did not come through the front lobby.

Maya brought her up through the underground entrance to avoid reporters.

Nathan waited in a private conference room.

When the door opened, he stood automatically.

Elena stopped three steps inside.

She was thirty-six, five years older than Nathan, with the same dark eyes their father had carried into every negotiation.

She wore black trousers, a cream coat, and no expression Nathan could read.

For several seconds, neither sibling spoke.

Maya quietly closed the door behind her.

Nathan tried first.

"Thank you for coming."

Elena looked at him.

"I didn't come for you."

The sentence landed exactly where she intended.

"I came because Dad's trust required it."

Nathan nodded.

"Fair."

Elena set a leather folder on the table.

"Maya told me about the transfer."

"And the gala?"

"Everyone in America with a phone knows about the gala."

Nathan looked away.

Elena did not soften.

"You hit her."

"She moved toward Claire."

"I saw the full video."

"Then you know what happened."

"I know you lost control for one second."

Nathan met her eyes.

"Yes."

He did not defend it further.

That surprised her.

Elena sat.

"Good."

Nathan frowned.

"Good?"

"Good that you can say it without turning it into somebody else's fault."

The old anger between them entered the room.

Nathan remembered their last real argument.

Elena had accused Victoria of isolating him.

Nathan had accused Elena of jealousy.

Graham had later told Nathan that Elena wanted the founder shares.

Victoria had produced emails that seemed to prove it.

Nathan had never asked Elena whether the emails were real.

Now he wondered.

"Elena, four years ago, did you send Graham a proposal asking him to remove me as CEO?"

Her face changed.

"No."

Nathan felt cold.

"I saw emails."

"You saw what they wanted you to see."

She opened the leather folder.

Inside were printed messages.

"I kept mine."

Nathan read them.

Elena had written to Graham about concerns over Victoria's access to company accounts.

She had asked for an independent audit.

She had never asked to remove Nathan.

The final message from Graham told Elena that Nathan considered her actions hostile and wanted no further interference.

Nathan looked up.

"I never told him that."

"I know."

Elena's voice cracked slightly on the last word.

It was the first visible emotion she had shown.

Nathan sat opposite her.

"Why didn't you call me?"

"I did."

"I don't remember."

"Victoria answered your phone."

Nathan closed his eyes.

Elena continued.

"Then your number changed."

He remembered Victoria arranging a security upgrade after a supposed leak of his personal contact information.

He had accepted a new number without thinking about who disappeared from the old one.

"I should have come to you," Nathan said.

"Yes."

Elena did not make forgiveness easy.

He respected that.

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him for a long moment.

"We'll deal with us later."

She tapped the trust papers.

"Right now, we stop them from taking Dad's company."

Nathan almost smiled.

"That sounds like you."

"You used to know what I sounded like."

Before he could answer, Claire entered with Maya.

Claire stopped when she saw Elena.

Nathan introduced them.

Elena studied Claire with the same directness she used on him.

"You're the analyst?"

"Yes."

"The one Victoria framed?"

"Apparently."

Elena nodded once.

"Then we have something in common."

Claire understood immediately.

The four of them spread documents across the table.

Maya explained the trust clause.

Elena could exercise temporary voting authority only if she formally accepted and if an independent legal finding supported collusion.

Detective Ruiz's discovery of the hotel server in Graham's vehicle was likely enough for a court petition.

They would file immediately.

Claire turned to the money trail.

"There is another problem."

She showed Elena the North Cedar trust documents.

Elena read the formation date.

"Eleven days before the wedding."

Nathan nodded.

"Victoria's trust."

Elena looked at Graham's name as trustee.

"I told you he was too close to her."

Nathan said nothing.

She did not need the satisfaction of repeating it.

Claire opened the anonymous ledger photograph.

"Whoever sent this says there are at least twenty-eight million dollars in questionable payments."

Elena pointed to one highlighted line.

"This account number."

Claire looked at her.

"You know it?"

"I think so."

Elena searched her email.

Four years earlier, before she left Hale Meridian, she had questioned a payment to a vendor called Meridian Legacy Services.

The account number matched.

Nathan stared at the screen.

"So this started before I married Victoria."

Elena shook her head.

"Maybe before you met her."

The room went quiet.

Nathan thought about his father's last years.

Cash problems.

Emergency refinancing.

Graham appearing with solutions.

Victoria appearing soon after.

A horrible possibility formed.

"What if the crisis that made me need Victoria wasn't accidental?"

Maya looked at him.

"That's a serious theory."

"I know."

Elena did not dismiss it.

She looked at the old payment record again.

"Dad believed someone was draining liquidity."

Nathan turned sharply.

"He told you that?"

"Two months before he died."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Elena's expression hardened.

"Because when I tried to tell you anything about Victoria or Graham, you told me I was trying to control you."

Nathan looked down.

Again, there was nothing useful to say in defense.

Claire broke the silence.

"We need the historic general ledger."

Nathan nodded.

"Serena can get it."

He called the CFO.

Serena answered on the first ring.

"I'm in the archive server now."

Nathan almost smiled.

"Were you listening through the wall?"

"No."

"Then how did you know?"

"Because I had the same thought an hour ago."

Serena sent a file.

Claire opened it.

Five years of payments appeared.

They filtered by the suspicious account.

The total rose.

Seven million.

Twelve million.

Nineteen million.

Thirty-four million.

Then one payment stopped everyone.

Date: six years earlier.

Two weeks before Nathan's father took out the emergency loan that nearly cost the family control of Hale Meridian.

Amount: $8.4 million.

Recipient: Meridian Legacy Services.

Approver: Graham Whitaker.

Secondary approval: Harold Hale.

Nathan's father.

Nathan stared at the screen.

"Dad approved it."

Elena shook her head slowly.

"No."

"His name is there."

"Look at the timestamp."

Nathan looked.

The approval occurred at 3:12 a.m.

Elena's eyes filled.

"Dad was in surgery that night."

Nathan felt the air leave his lungs.

Someone had been forging Hale signatures for years.

Elena asked Nathan to stay behind after the others left the conference room.

"There is one more thing you need to know about Dad."

Nathan remained by the table.

"What?"

"He was going to remove Graham."

Nathan looked at her sharply.

"When?"

"The week before his surgery."

Elena opened an old note on her phone.

She had written it after a conversation with Harold because she feared he would forget details while taking pain medication.

Harold planned to ask the board for outside counsel and a forensic audit.

He also planned to tell Graham that his authority was suspended pending review.

"Did Graham know?" Nathan asked.

"Dad told him they needed to talk after the surgery."

Nathan thought about the forged transaction occurring while Harold was under anesthesia.

The timing no longer looked random.

Someone had used the moment when Harold could not intervene.

Elena continued.

"After Dad died, Graham told me there was no evidence and that pursuing the issue would frighten lenders."

"And Victoria?"

"She said the same thing."

Nathan sat down.

He remembered those months differently.

Victoria had seemed like the only person willing to face the lenders.

Graham had seemed like the only lawyer able to calm them.

If both had helped create or conceal the crisis, their rescue had been a performance built around a fire they understood better than anyone else.

Elena watched him absorb it.

"Don't turn this into a story where you were stupid."

Nathan looked up.

"I was."

"Sometimes."

A faint smile appeared.

Then she became serious again.

"But they had information you didn't have, and they controlled the information you received."

Nathan nodded.

"I still chose not to question them."

"Yes."

Elena never gave him easy exits.

That was why their father had chosen her.

Nathan looked at the old note.

"If Dad had lived another week, maybe none of this happens."

Elena folded the phone into her palm.

"Or maybe it happens differently."

She stood.

"Stop trying to rewrite the part we can't change."

Nathan looked toward the files Claire was building in the next room.

"Then we fix the part we can."

Elena nodded.

"Now you sound like Dad."
