Chapter 1: The Land Beneath Their Kingdom

Chapter 1: The Land Beneath Their Kingdom
She wasn't trying to stop me from speaking.
She was trying to stop everyone else from hearing.
"You liar!" Vanessa screamed as she grabbed for the microphone. "She's making this up! Security!"
But before anyone moved, June calmly raised her phone.
"Thirty-two thousand people are watching live," she announced.
The ballroom froze.
Vanessa's hand stopped inches from my face.
I reached into my leather portfolio and placed a thick stack of yellowed documents onto the podium.
"I believe these belong in the conversation."
The HOA president frowned as he accepted the first folder.
His expression changed almost immediately.
Then he opened the second.
And the third.
His hands began to shake.
"These..." he whispered.
"...are original land deeds."
The room fell silent.
I nodded.
"My great-grandfather purchased over two thousand acres in Orange County in 1918."
Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.
"The ranch eventually sold portions for development."
I slid another document across the table.
"But one condition remained."
The HOA attorney stepped forward.
"What condition?"
"The land was never sold."
Confused murmurs spread through the crowd.
"The buildings were."
Every face stared at me.
"My family retained ownership of the ground beneath every structure through a ninety-nine-year renewable ground lease."
The attorney snatched the contract.
He read one page.
Then another.
His confidence vanished.
"My God..."
He looked directly at the HOA president.
"She's telling the truth."
The room erupted.
People shouted over one another.
"What does that mean?"
"Who owns our property?"
"Is this some kind of joke?"
The attorney answered with a pale face.
"It means... you own your homes."
He swallowed hard.
"But she owns the land beneath them."
The ballroom exploded into panic.
Vanessa stumbled backward.
My husband rushed toward the attorney.
"That's impossible!"
The attorney simply handed him the contract.
My husband read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
His face turned ghost white.
His mistress quietly slipped my wedding bracelet off her wrist.
No one noticed except me.
May you like
I smiled.
That bracelet would be the least expensive thing she'd lose tonight.
