Chapter 16 - The Archive
Carter Development’s digital archive occupied a secure floor beneath the main offices.
Access required two credentials.
Daniel’s executive access had been revoked.
But Eric Sloan knew someone whose access had not.
At 2:13 a.m., a maintenance contractor entered the building.
He carried a toolbox.
Inside it was a cloned security card.
The camera recorded him entering the archive corridor.
Three minutes later, the camera feed went dark.
At 2:40 a.m., an alarm triggered.
Private security arrived first.
Then police.
The contractor disappeared before anyone reached the server room.
But something had been taken.
Rebecca received the call at 3:12.
She arrived before four.
Caroline joined her.
The technology director looked furious.
“They removed one physical backup drive.”
“Which one?”
Rebecca asked.
“Executive archive.”
“Daniel?”
The director hesitated.
“Mostly.”
Caroline looked around.
“Was anything deleted from the servers?”
“No.”
Rebecca frowned.
“Then why steal a backup?”
The director opened a computer.
“Maybe because whoever did it didn’t know we migrated the archive last month.”
Caroline almost smiled.
“So the data still exists.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca leaned closer.
“Restore everything.”
By sunrise, the missing archive appeared.
Thousands of files.
Emails.
Draft contracts.
Private notes.
Scanned documents.
Then they found a folder named PHX_FINAL.
Caroline opened it.
A list of participants appeared.
Daniel Carter.
Victor Hale.
Marcus Vane.
Two Northstar representatives.
And Eric Sloan.
Rebecca stared at the final name.
“Sloan was part of Phoenix?”
Caroline nodded slowly.
“Apparently.”
Another file contained instructions.
The plan was not merely to sell Carter Development.
It involved manufacturing a financial crisis first.
Credit lines would be intentionally disrupted.
Rumors would pressure the board.
Company value would fall.
Then Victor Hale’s consortium would purchase the business cheaply.
Daniel would receive an undisclosed side payment.
Rebecca read in silence.
Adam stood behind her.
“They were going to sabotage the company.”
“Yes.”
“To buy it cheaper?”
“Yes.”
Adam shook his head.
“That’s insane.”
“No.”
Caroline said.
“It’s calculated.”
Rebecca opened another message.
Marcus Vane wrote that Rebecca’s resistance remained the largest obstacle.
Daniel replied.
THEN BREAK HER CREDIBILITY BEFORE THE BOARD.
Another email proposed leaking allegations that Rebecca suffered from emotional instability.
Rebecca stared at the words.
For years, Daniel had told her she was overly sensitive.
Paranoid.
Difficult.
Unstable whenever she challenged him.
Now he had planned to turn those private insults into public weapons.
Adam read over her shoulder.
His face darkened.
“He was going to tell people you were mentally unstable?”
Rebecca nodded.
Adam walked away.
Rebecca let him.
Her own anger had moved beyond pain.
It had become clarity.
The archive contained enough evidence to destroy Project Phoenix.
But there was one more file.
A recorded conference call.
Daniel’s voice was immediately recognizable.
Victor Hale asked what would happen if Rebecca refused to surrender control.
Daniel laughed.
Then said something Rebecca would never forget.
“She’ll surrender.”
“She always does eventually.”
The recording ended.
Rebecca remained motionless.
Caroline looked at her.
“You okay?”
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.”
And she meant it.
Because Daniel had just explained the foundation of his entire plan.
He believed Rebecca would surrender.
Not because the law favored him.
Not because the company belonged to him.
Not because his documents were real.
He believed she would surrender because she always had before.
Rebecca closed the laptop.
“Send copies to the board.”
Caroline nodded.
“And the authorities?”
“Yes.”
Adam looked at his mother.
“What happens now?”
