Chapter 8 - The Letter Laura Left Behind

I had read Laura’s final letter only once.

It was too painful.

After she died, I placed it with the others and locked the chest.

Now I forced myself to reconstruct every sentence.

Laura had written it during a business trip.

She had sounded frightened.

Not hysterical.

Not confused.

Careful.

She said she had uncovered something inside the company.

She mentioned Victor.

She wrote that she was meeting someone who could prove where the missing money had gone.

Then came the line I remembered.

If anything ever happens to me, there is something Michael needs to know about Victor.

But what came after it?

I couldn’t remember.

Grief had blurred everything.

Andrew arrived before sunrise.

“There may be a copy.”

“Where?”

“Laura’s attorney archived estate documents.”

We called him at seven.

Howard Benson had retired to Vermont.

His assistant found scanned files by noon.

At twelve forty-three, the missing letter appeared in my inbox.

I opened it with Emily sitting downstairs beside Claire.

Laura’s words filled the screen.

Michael, if you are reading this because something happened to me, do not let Victor Hale anywhere near Emily’s trust.

I stopped.

Andrew read over my shoulder.

There was more.

Victor has been moving money through the Whitmore Foundation.

Rebecca Whitmore is either helping him or being used by him.

I have not determined which.

My blood turned cold.

Laura knew Rebecca by name.

The letter continued.

There is a protected archive hidden inside the trust records.

The access phrase is Birdie Comes Home.

Do not use it unless necessary.

If Victor learns the archive exists, he will come after control of the trust.

Andrew straightened.

“What archive?”

“I have no idea.”

He called the trust administrator.

Forty minutes later, we were inside a conference room at First Metropolitan Bank.

An administrator named Mr. Levin appeared uncomfortable when I showed him the letter.

“I was instructed not to disclose the sealed archive unless you provided the phrase.”

“Birdie Comes Home.”

His face changed immediately.

He stood.

“I’ll be back.”

Ten minutes later he returned carrying an encrypted drive and a sealed envelope.

“This was deposited by Laura Grant six days before her death.”

My hands went cold.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“Her instructions were explicit.”

Mr. Levin slid the envelope toward me.

Inside was another note.

Michael, if you have opened this, then Victor found a way back into our lives.

I had to stop reading.

Andrew put a hand on my shoulder.

I continued.

The drive contains financial records, recordings, and copies of communications.

Do not confront him alone.

Most importantly, protect Emily.

Victor believes her trust contains evidence that can destroy him.

The room became silent.

Andrew looked at the encrypted drive.

“This is why they wanted control.”

I nodded slowly.

Not only the money.

The evidence.

If Rebecca became Emily’s guardian, she could pressure the trust administrators.

She could search the protected records.

She could destroy whatever Laura had hidden.

Mr. Levin connected the drive to an isolated computer.

We entered the phrase.

Dozens of folders appeared.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

Contracts.

Audio files.

Then we found a folder labeled R.W.

Rebecca Whitmore.

There were fourteen recordings.

Andrew clicked the oldest.

Laura’s voice filled the room.

May you like

Then Rebecca answered.

“You don’t understand what Victor will do if he discovers I talked to you.”
