CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH COMES OUT

CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH COMES OUT
The engagement celebration was forgotten.
Guests stood in silence as Ethan demanded answers.
“Where is Amelia?”
Little Lily lowered her head.
“She died last winter.”
A painful gasp spread through the crowd.
“She got sick,” Lily whispered. “Before she died, she gave me the crest and told me to find the Sterling family.”
Tears filled Ethan’s eyes.
He had spent twenty years believing his sister was gone.
Now he learned she had survived.
Only to lose her again.
Then Lily reached into her tiny purse.
“There’s something else.”
She pulled out a folded letter.
The handwriting made Ethan freeze.
It was Amelia’s.
His hands shook as he opened it.
The ballroom became completely silent.
Dear Ethan,
If you are reading this, I am already gone.
The people who destroyed our family never stopped looking for me.
One of them is closer than you think.
Trust Lily.
Trust the truth.
And never trust Vanessa Hartwell.
The crowd exploded.
Every face turned toward Vanessa.
“No!” she screamed. “She forged that letter!”
But Ethan continued reading.
Twenty years ago, Vanessa’s father paid a servant to help kidnap me after the estate fire. He wanted control of the Sterling inheritance.
When I escaped, I spent my life hiding.
Now my daughter is the only witness left.
Protect her.
Vanessa’s knees nearly buckled.
The secret her family had buried for decades had just been exposed.
And then a voice came from the entrance.
“Everything in that letter is true.”
An elderly man stepped forward.
It was Walter Reeves.
The former Sterling estate manager.
The man who had disappeared twenty years earlier.
“I witnessed the kidnapping,” he said.

“And I’m finally ready to tell the truth.”
Vanessa knew her life was over.
