Chapter 2: The Truth Richard Left Behind

Chapter 2: The Truth Richard Left Behind
Nathan couldn't believe it.
"Why would my father do this?"
Claire reached deeper into the folder.
"There was a letter."
The room became silent again.
The envelope was old.
Richard Pierce's handwriting covered the front.
To Claire.
Claire unfolded it carefully.
Her eyes softened as she began reading.
"Claire, if you are reading this, then I am gone."
Nathan's breath caught.
"My family may judge you because you were not born wealthy. They may mistake kindness for weakness. Do not let them."
Guests listened without moving.
Richard continued:
"I built my company from nothing. During my final years, only one person visited me without asking for money, influence, or inheritance."
Claire's hands trembled.
"That person was you."
Nathan slowly looked at his bride.
Suddenly memories returned.
The hospital visits.
The quiet conversations.
The countless afternoons Claire spent helping his father while the rest of the family attended galas and charity photoshoots.
Richard's words echoed through the hall.
"You cared for me when I could no longer benefit anyone. That is why I trust you with what matters most."
Tears filled Claire's eyes.
Then she reached the final paragraph.
"And if my son ever asks you to choose between your dignity and his comfort, choose your dignity."
Nathan felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.
Because only minutes earlier, he had told Claire to apologize.
Not to him.
Not to the woman who humiliated her.
But to the woman who had thrown wine in her face.
The same woman now staring at the floor in shame.
For the first time, Nathan understood.
His father had not been testing Claire.
May you like
He had been testing him.
And he had failed.
