Chapter 1: The Wedding Interrupted

Chapter 1: The Wedding Interrupted

The string quartet had barely finished the opening notes of the bridal march when the towering oak doors at the back of the Saint Aurelia Ballroom slowly swung open.

Every head turned.

A woman stepped inside.

She wore a simple ivory suit instead of an evening gown, her dark hair pulled neatly behind her shoulders. There was nothing flashy about her appearance, yet the calm confidence in her eyes immediately silenced the room.

Juliette frowned.

"I'm sorry," she said loudly enough for the guests to hear. "This is a private wedding."

The woman smiled politely.

"I know."

She continued walking toward the altar.

The security guards hesitated.

Before they could stop her, an elderly man entered behind her.

Gasps echoed across the ballroom.

It was Judge Harold Whitmore, a retired federal judge known throughout the country for his uncompromising integrity.

Behind him came two investigators from the California Bureau of Investigation.

And finally...

Douglas Mercer slowly rose from his front-row seat.

His face turned completely pale.

"No..." he whispered.

"It can't be."

The woman finally stopped beneath the floral arch.

Her eyes never left Douglas.

"Hello, Father."

The room froze.

Juliette laughed nervously.

"This isn't funny."

The woman reached into her purse and placed a small silver pendant onto the altar.

Douglas immediately recognized it.

It had belonged to Caroline.

The necklace had never been recovered after the fire.

His knees nearly buckled.

"No..."

The woman's voice remained calm.

"My name is Caroline Mercer."

"And I never died."

A wave of whispers crashed across the ballroom.

Telephones instantly appeared in guests' hands.

The groom stared at Juliette.

Juliette's smile vanished.

"She's lying."

Judge Whitmore stepped forward.

"DNA testing completed forty-eight hours ago confirms her identity."

He handed Douglas a sealed report.

"The woman standing before you is your biological daughter."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Douglas's trembling hands opened the envelope.

The results left no room for doubt.

Tears rolled down his face.

"My little girl..."

Caroline looked at him without emotion.

"You buried me while I was still alive."

The words struck harder than any scream.

Then she turned toward Juliette.

"You told everyone I died."

Juliette crossed her arms.

"Because you did."

"No."

"You simply made sure nobody looked for me."

Caroline nodded toward the investigators.

"I've spent fifteen years proving exactly how that happened."

The wedding had officially become a crime scene.
