The bank erupted into chaos.
Police stormed inside and arrested both robbers.
But Ethan could only think about one thing.
My dad is alive.
Hours later, Sarah and Ethan sat inside a federal office building.
Across the table sat FBI Agent Rebecca Hayes.
She looked exhausted.
As if she had been hiding a secret for years.
Finally, she opened a thick file.
Inside was a recent photograph.
Sarah nearly fainted.
It was Michael.
Older.
Thinner.
But alive.
Tears rolled down her face.
"Why?" she whispered.
Agent Hayes took a deep breath.
"Because your husband uncovered a corruption network that reached into law enforcement, business, and politics."
She slid another photo across the table.
Several powerful men stood together at a private event.
One face was circled in red.
Senator Richard Holloway.
A respected public figure.
A national hero.
Or so everyone believed.
"He was the leader," Hayes said.
"When Michael discovered evidence against him, they ordered his assassination."
Ethan clenched his fists.
"But Dad survived."
Hayes nodded.
"Barely."
For three years Michael had lived under federal protection while investigators built a case against the network.
Only a handful of people knew he was alive.
Not even his family.
Sarah broke down crying.
"You let us believe he was dead."
Hayes lowered her eyes.
"It was the only way to keep you alive."
Then the office door opened.
A man stepped inside.
Gray streaks now touched his hair.
Scars crossed his neck.
But Ethan recognized him immediately.
"Dad."
Michael Carter dropped to his knees.
His son ran into his arms.
Neither of them spoke.
They simply held each other and cried.
