Chapter 2: Every Secret Finds a Witness

Chapter 2: Every Secret Finds a Witness
The mansion felt smaller with every passing minute.
Officers carried boxes from the study.
Computers.
Financial records.
Hard drives.
Locked safes.
The family patriarch, Richard Ashford, finally lost his composure.
"You have no warrant."
Ruiz placed a signed document onto the dining table.
"I have six."
Richard's hands trembled.
Meanwhile, forensic investigators carefully examined the staircase.
One officer looked toward Ruiz.
"The wax coating is fresh."
Ruiz nodded.
"As expected."
Amelia quietly explained.
"They polished only the top three steps this morning."
"Enough to make any fall appear accidental."
The housekeeper gasped.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
Ruiz opened another file.
"We also discovered messages."
He projected them onto the living room television.
Vanessa:
'If she loses the baby, everything becomes easier.'
Another message.
'No witnesses. Make it look emotional.'
The room turned ice cold.
Richard slowly sat down.
"You've been reading our phones?"
Ruiz answered evenly.
"A judge allowed it."
Vanessa suddenly pointed at Richard.
"It wasn't my idea!"
"You told me she would inherit everything!"
Richard shouted back.
"You promised she would never survive the pregnancy!"
One accusation after another exploded across the room.
Brothers blamed sisters.
Lawyers blamed accountants.
Business partners blamed everyone.
Years of lies unraveled in less than twenty minutes.
Amelia watched quietly.
She had imagined this moment many times.
She expected satisfaction.
Instead...
She only felt exhausted.
Ruiz walked beside her.
"You don't have to stay."
She shook her head.
"I need to hear the truth."
The detective looked toward the family destroying itself with every sentence.
"I think you already have."
Outside...
News helicopters began circling overhead.
