Chapter 1: The Seat That Didn't Change

Chapter 1: The Seat That Didn't Change

Marcus's smile lingered for only a second before he answered.

"No, ma'am."

The reply was simple.

It carried no fear.

No challenge.

Just honesty.

Victoria Reynolds stared at him as though the answer itself were offensive.

"I'm Victoria Reynolds," she announced loudly enough for half the cabin to hear. "My husband owns Reynolds Global Investments. We fly first class because we've earned it."

Several passengers nodded with quiet recognition.

Others reached for their phones.

Marcus simply said, "That's nice."

A muffled laugh escaped from somewhere behind them.

Victoria's cheeks tightened.

A flight attendant hurried over.

"Good evening, ma'am. Is there a problem?"

"There certainly is," Victoria snapped. "This child is sitting in my seat."

The attendant checked her tablet.

"May I see your boarding pass, please?"

Victoria presented hers with dramatic confidence.

The attendant scanned it.

Then she looked at Marcus.

"May I see yours, sweetheart?"

Marcus unzipped his old backpack.

Everything inside was carefully organized.

A small notebook.

A folded sweater.

A hardcover science book.

Finally, he handed over his boarding pass.

The attendant scanned it.

A soft chime sounded.

She looked back up.

"Mr. Marcus Carter is correctly assigned to Seat 2A."

Silence.

Victoria frowned.

"There must be a system error."

"There isn't, ma'am."

"I paid for this seat."

"You paid for Seat 2B."

The attendant pointed gently to the window seat beside Marcus.

"This aisle seat belongs to him."

A ripple of whispers spread through the cabin.

Victoria refused to move.

"There is absolutely no reason an unaccompanied child needs the best seat in first class."

Marcus answered before the attendant could.

"My grandmother said aisle seats are safer for me because of my medical brace."

Only then did people notice the carbon-fiber support hidden beneath his jeans.

He never mentioned it before.

He never used it for sympathy.

Victoria looked at it for barely a second.

Then dismissed it.

"I still don't believe this."

The captain's voice came over the speakers requesting everyone to be seated.

Reluctantly, Victoria dropped into Seat 2B.

But her glare never left Marcus.
