Vanessa refused to accept it.
She grabbed the report and scanned the pages.
The confidence slowly disappeared from her face.
"This can't be true."
But it was.
Richard finally stood.
For the first time in years, his voice cracked.
"Emma..."
She looked away.
"No."
The pain in her voice stopped him.
"You don't get to say my name like we're family."
The guests lowered their eyes.
Moments earlier, they had watched her being humiliated.
Now they understood.
The young woman they mocked wasn't chasing a rich man.
She was his daughter.
Richard stepped closer.
"I didn't know."
Emma laughed bitterly.
"My mother said you'd say that."
The words hit him harder than any insult.
Because they were true.
He hadn't known.
But ignorance didn't erase the years she spent struggling.

Taking care of her sick mother.
While he lived in luxury.
Vanessa suddenly pointed at Emma.

Emma slowly wiped away her tears.

She reached into her bag again.
This time she removed a small envelope.
"My mother left this for him."
Richard opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Sarah's final message.
It contained no anger.
No accusations.
Only one request.
Please don't hate our daughter for my choices.
Take care of her if you ever meet her.
Richard's knees nearly gave out.
For years he had imagined Sarah blaming him.
Instead, she had forgiven him.
The room was silent except for the sound of Vanessa's uneven breathing.
