Chapter 2: The Monster Unmasked

Chapter 2: The Monster Unmasked

Evan remained calm.

At first.

"This better be important," he said, loosening his tie.

"I have surgeries scheduled."

The hospital attorney slid a sealed envelope across the table.

"Before we begin, we'd like to ask one question."

"Have you ever physically assaulted your wife?"

Evan laughed.

Actually laughed.

"This is ridiculous."

"She's emotional."

"She's pregnant."

"I've never touched her."

The attorney opened the folder.

Photographs appeared on the screen.

Bruise after bruise.

Close-ups.

Medical measurements.

Time stamps.

Fresh injuries.

Healing injuries.

Finger-shaped marks around her ribs.

The room became painfully quiet.

Evan's confidence flickered.

"Those could have come from anywhere."

Another document appeared.

The ultrasound technician's statement.

The attending physician's report.

The nurse's sworn affidavit.

Then security footage.

Recorded only an hour earlier.

It showed Mia flinching before anyone even reached toward her.

A trauma response impossible to fake.

Still, Evan refused to surrender.

"She's unstable."

"She's lying."

Then Margaret pressed a button.

An audio recording filled the room.

His own voice.

Captured from a voicemail Mia had secretly saved weeks earlier.

"If you ever leave me...

I'll make sure you never wake up after your C-section."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Every face around the table turned toward him.

He realized exactly what had happened.

His wife had survived long enough to tell the truth.

The board chairman slowly removed his glasses.

"Dr. Evan Vale..."

"You are suspended immediately."

Hospital security entered through both doors.

Not to protect him.

To escort him out.

As they stepped forward, Evan finally looked afraid.

He searched every familiar face.

Not one person stood.

May you like

Not one person defended him.

The empire he had spent years building collapsed in less than fifteen minutes.
