Chapter 1: The Footage Nobody Could Erase

Chapter 1: The Footage Nobody Could Erase

The sirens stopped outside the Whitmore Hotel.

Seconds later, the ballroom doors burst open.

Two Chicago police officers rushed inside, followed by paramedics carrying a trauma kit.

Every guest turned.

The room that had been filled with whispers moments before became suffocatingly quiet.

The younger officer looked directly at Sophie.

Blood covered the side of her face.

"What happened here?"

Before I could answer...

Preston stepped forward with perfect confidence.

"My niece attacked me after stealing my phone."

He even sounded wounded.

"I only defended myself."

The officer frowned.

"You defended yourself..."

"...against an eight-year-old?"

No one answered.

The silence was louder than any confession.

The paramedics carefully wrapped a bandage around Sophie's head.

She winced but never cried.

She only held my hand tighter.

Then the hotel manager hurried into the ballroom.

His face had turned pale.

"Officer..."

"Our security director needs to speak with you immediately."

Preston didn't react.

He still believed he controlled the story.

The manager continued.

"The entire reception hall is covered by six high-definition security cameras."

My brother's smile vanished.

One officer followed the manager into the security office.

The other remained beside us.

Five endless minutes passed.

Nobody spoke.

My mother stared at the floor.

My father kept adjusting his expensive watch.

Preston stood perfectly still.

Then...

The officer returned.

His expression had completely changed.

He walked straight toward Preston.

"We've reviewed the footage."

Every guest leaned forward.

The officer continued.

"We saw you remove your own phone."

"We saw you place it inside your niece's jacket."

Gasps echoed across the ballroom.

The bride slowly stepped backward.

She looked at Preston as though seeing a stranger.

The officer wasn't finished.

"We also watched you tear the oak menu board from the display..."

"...and strike a child in the head."

No one breathed.

Preston opened his mouth.

"I can explain—"

The officer interrupted.

"No."

"You can explain downtown."

Cold steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

For the first time in his life...

No one came to rescue him.

Not his parents.

Not his friends.

Not even his new wife.

As the officers escorted him toward the ballroom doors...

He twisted around and screamed at me.

"You ruined my life!"

I looked down at Sophie.

Then back at him.

"No."

May you like

"You did."

And the doors closed behind him.
