Chapter 2: The Girl Everyone Forgot

Chapter 2: The Girl Everyone Forgot

An hour later, mourners gathered inside Harper Technologies' executive boardroom.

The funeral flowers had barely begun to wilt before conversations shifted from condolences...

...to ownership.

The long mahogany table reflected millions of dollars in tailored suits.

Daniel sat confidently at its head.

Margaret Ellis placed a thick leather folder on the table.

"This contains William Harper's final testament."

Everyone leaned forward.

Reporters waited outside the glass doors.

Executives exchanged nervous glances.

Margaret began reading.

"To my son, Daniel Harper..."

Daniel relaxed.

"...I leave my personal watch collection."

He blinked.

"To my brother Charles..."

A vacation property.

"To the Harper Foundation..."

Thirty million dollars.

People looked at one another.

Where was the company?

Where was the fortune?

Margaret turned another page.

"The ownership of Harper Technologies...

along with all controlling shares...

is transferred to..."

She paused.

Every heartbeat seemed louder than the last.

"...Emma Reed."

The room exploded.

"Impossible!"

"There has to be a mistake!"

Daniel slammed both hands onto the table.

"This is fraud!"

Margaret calmly slid another document forward.

"It has already been verified by three independent law firms."

Daniel's face turned pale.

"Who is she?"

Emma quietly answered.

"I was twelve years old when I met your father."

Confusion spread.

She continued.

"My mother cleaned offices in one of his oldest factories."

Daniel frowned.

"So?"

"She died when I was thirteen."

Emma's voice never shook.

"I slept in that factory for three weeks."

No one spoke.

"Your father found me."

Flashbacks seemed to live behind her eyes.

"He didn't give me money."

"He gave me school."

"He gave me books."

"He paid every tuition bill anonymously."

"He told me..."

Her voice softened.

"'Never tell anyone I helped you.

One day...

help someone else instead.'"

Margaret smiled sadly.

"He kept every letter she ever sent."

Daniel whispered,

"My father never told me."

Margaret looked directly at him.

"No.

Because every time he tried...

May you like

you were busy proving you deserved the company...

instead of learning why he built it."
