Chapter 1 — The Man Who Didn’t Kneel

Chapter 1 — The Man Who Didn’t Kneel

The ballroom remained frozen under the weight of the father’s words.

Mark forced a laugh—thin, unstable.

“This is ridiculous,” he said, glancing around for support that no longer came. “It was a joke. Everyone saw it.”

But no one met his eyes.

Not his friends.

Not the guests.

Not even his mother, whose smile had started to fade.

The bride’s father didn’t move from beside his daughter. His hand rested lightly on her shoulder, steadying her like an anchor in a storm.

“You embarrassed her in front of hundreds of witnesses,” he said quietly. “That wasn’t a joke. That was a choice.”

Mark’s jaw tightened. “She’s my wife.”

A pause.

Then the father replied, colder now.

“Not for long.”

A murmur rippled through the crowd.

Mark’s mother stepped forward sharply. “Excuse me? You can’t just—”

The father lifted one hand.

And she stopped.

Not because he shouted.

Because something in his presence made people stop.

At the far side of the ballroom, one of the father’s assistants quietly entered and approached him, handing over a slim black folder.

He opened it.

Then looked at Mark.

“You signed a marital agreement this morning,” he said. “You didn’t read it carefully, did you?”

Mark hesitated for the first time.

The father continued.

“Clause seven. Public humiliation, physical endangerment, or intentional degradation of the bride voids the marriage contract immediately.”

The room went silent again.

Mark blinked. “That’s not— you can’t be serious.”

But the father already turned slightly, speaking to the assistant.

“File it.”

Mark’s voice rose. “Wait—file what?”

The assistant answered without emotion.

“Annulment. Effective immediately.”

A shockwave passed through the guests. Phones finally lowered completely.

The bride stood trembling beneath her father’s jacket, frosting still clinging to her hair—but now she was watching something else entirely.

For the first time that night… Mark didn’t look powerful.

He looked exposed.

And he was starting to realize it.
