Chapter 2: The Test No One Expected

Chapter 2: The Test No One Expected

Daniel led his grandmother into the private lounge while Vanessa remained standing alone beneath hundreds of silent eyes.

No one defended her.

No one comforted her.

Several guests quietly walked away.

Others whispered among themselves.

Inside the lounge, Daniel apologized again and again.

"I'm so sorry, Grandma."

Eleanor gently placed her hand over his.

"You have nothing to apologize for."

"I came here because your late grandfather always believed that kindness cannot be measured by charity galas."

"It appears in the first thirty seconds of meeting someone who offers nothing in return."

Daniel lowered his head.

"You planned this."

"Yes."

She smiled softly.

"I visited every hotel we own dressed exactly like this."

"Most employees treated me with respect."

"A few ignored me."

"But today..."

She looked toward the glass doors where Vanessa remained frozen.

"...I learned something far more important."

Daniel finally asked the question weighing on his heart.

"What happens now?"

Eleanor looked directly at him.

"That depends on whether you want a beautiful wedding..."

"...or a beautiful marriage."

Outside, Vanessa desperately called her parents.

Then her friends.

Then her wedding planner.

Everyone had the same advice.

Apologize.

Immediately.

She rushed into the lounge with tears streaming down her face.

"I'm sorry."

"I made a terrible mistake."

"I judged you by your clothes."

Eleanor listened quietly.

Then she asked one simple question.

"If I truly had been a poor widow looking for shelter..."

"...would you have apologized?"

Vanessa opened her mouth.

May you like

Nothing came out.

Because both women already knew the answer.
