CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET

CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET
The wedding reception continued, but nobody could forget what had happened.
Later that evening, Evelyn asked Emma and Daniel—the bride and groom—to join her in a private room.
Inside waited three attorneys.
Daniel looked confused.
Emma looked nervous.
Evelyn placed one final document on the table.
"There is something I've kept secret for many years."
Emma swallowed hard.
"What is it?"
Evelyn took her daughter's hand.
"When your father died, he left instructions."
She opened the document.
The attorneys nodded.
"This trust becomes active on the day you marry."
Emma's eyes widened.
The estate wasn't worth millions.
It was worth billions.
Hotels.
Resorts.
Commercial properties.
Investments across the country.
Daniel nearly fell back into his chair.
Emma stared at the pages.
"But why keep this hidden?"
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
"Because money changes people."
Her gaze drifted toward the ballroom.
"Tonight proved that."
The room fell silent.
Daniel squeezed Emma's hand.
"I didn't marry her for any of this."
"I know," Evelyn replied.
"That's why I'm happy."
Outside, Margaret was desperately trying to explain herself to guests.
But the damage had already been done.
