Chapter 1: Room 237 Became a Courtroom

Chapter 1: Room 237 Became a Courtroom

Within fifteen minutes, the quiet hallway outside Room 237 looked nothing like a hotel corridor.

It looked like judgment day.

The first to arrive was Maverick's mother.

Still dressed in emerald silk.

Pearl necklace.

Perfect makeup.

A smile remained on her face until she saw me standing outside the room in my wedding gown.

Then she saw her son.

Barefoot.

Half-dressed.

Standing behind me.

Her smile disappeared.

"...Maverick?"

Behind her came his father.

His younger sister.

His godfather.

Two uncles.

Several cousins.

Even the pastor who had been waiting at the ballroom.

My own family arrived moments later.

Three generations.

Every face carried the same mixture of confusion and fear.

No one spoke.

I simply stepped aside.

"Go inside."

Mrs. Bennett entered first.

Then she stopped.

The torn lavender bridesmaid dress.

The champagne glasses.

The rumpled sheets.

Penelope hiding behind the blanket.

Everything told the story before a single word was spoken.

Her hand flew across the room.

The slap echoed against the walls.

"Maverick!"

He staggered backward.

"Mom, please—"

"You embarrassed this family..."

She pointed toward me.

"...on the day that woman was supposed to become your wife."

His father didn't yell.

Somehow, that was worse.

He removed his wedding ring.

Slowly turned it between his fingers.

Then looked at his son.

"I spent thirty years teaching you what a husband should be."

"You learned nothing."

Meanwhile, Penelope finally found enough courage to speak.

"It wasn't planned."

"It just happened."

Aunt Rose laughed.

Not kindly.

Not softly.

The sharp laugh of someone who had lived long enough to recognize lies instantly.

"It 'just happened'?"

She bent down.

Picked up Penelope's phone from beneath the nightstand.

"It must have happened every Thursday night too."

Penelope froze.

A notification lit up the screen.

Another.

And another.

Hundreds of messages.

Aunt Rose looked toward me.

"Sweetheart..."

"I think you should read these."

I unlocked the phone with Penelope's own birthday.

The password she once joked she'd never change.

My stomach turned.

Months.

Not days.

Months of conversations.

Secret dinners.

Weekend trips.

Hotel reservations.

Photos.

Promises.

Plans.

One message made the room fall completely silent.

After the wedding we'll finally stop pretending.

The timestamp...

Three weeks ago.

They hadn't betrayed me on my wedding day.

They had built the entire wedding while planning their future together.

The ceremony.

The invitations.

The flowers.

Every smile.

Every rehearsal.

Every fake promise.

It had all been theater.

I looked up.

Maverick couldn't even face me anymore.

"You were going to let me marry you..."

"...while planning your life with her?"

He whispered one word.

"I'm sorry."

I shook my head.

"No."

"You're sorry you got caught."

May you like

No one defended him.

Not even his own family.
