Chapter 1 – The Woman in the Wheelchair

Chapter 1 – The Woman in the Wheelchair
"The hand never came down."
Emma didn't realize she was holding her breath until the entire ballroom fell silent.
Victoria Langford stared at her wrist trapped in Emma's grip, disbelief flashing across her perfectly made-up face.
"You... touched me?" Victoria hissed.
Emma immediately released her hand and took one step back.
"I'm sorry, ma'am," she said, her voice shaking. "But you were about to hit her."
The elderly woman in the wheelchair remained silent.
Her eyes never left Emma's face.
Victoria laughed—a cold, humorless sound.
"Do you have any idea who I am?"
Emma swallowed.
"Yes."
"And you still dared stop me?"
"I couldn't stand by while someone was being hurt."
The answer only made Victoria angrier.
"This woman rammed her wheelchair into my dress! Do you know how much this gown costs?"
Emma glanced at the wheelchair.
The elderly woman's trembling hands still rested on the controls.
"It was an accident," Emma replied quietly.
Victoria stepped forward.
"You insignificant little waitress..."
She raised her hand again.
This time not toward the old woman.
Toward Emma.
Before anyone could react—
A deep voice echoed across the ballroom.
"Enough."
The single word carried through the room with terrifying authority.
Victoria froze.
Every guest instinctively stepped aside.
The crowd parted.
A tall man dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit walked slowly across the marble floor.
His expression revealed nothing.
His dark eyes revealed everything.
Vincent Moretti.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
The security guards standing around the ballroom straightened instantly.
Victoria forced a smile.
"Mr. Moretti... I can explain."
Vincent ignored her.
He walked directly past the billionaire socialite.
Past the politicians.
Past the executives.
He stopped beside the wheelchair.
He gently knelt before the elderly woman.
"Mother."
Gasps spread across the ballroom.
Emma's heart nearly stopped.
Mother?
The quiet woman she had protected...
...was Isabella Moretti.
The mother of the most powerful man in Chicago.
Vincent carefully adjusted the blanket covering Isabella's legs.
"Are you hurt?"
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
Then, for the first time since the confrontation began, Isabella smiled.
"It was this young woman."
She looked toward Emma.
"She protected me."
Every eye turned toward Emma once again.
Only now...
They were looking at her very differently.
Vincent rose to his feet.
He studied Emma silently.
She expected anger.
Questions.
Suspicion.
Instead, he simply asked,
"What is your name?"
"...Emma Carter."
"How long have you worked here?"
"Almost four years."
"Were you ordered to intervene?"
"No."
"Then why did you?"
Emma hesitated.
Finally she answered honestly.
"My father can't defend himself anymore."
Confusion crossed Vincent's face.
Emma continued softly.
"He had a stroke."
"I know what it looks like when someone helpless is about to be hurt."
"I couldn't ignore it."
The ballroom became so quiet that even the crystal chandeliers seemed to hum.
Isabella reached out and gently took Emma's hand.
"You remind me of someone."
"My husband."
"He never walked away when someone weaker needed help."
Emma felt tears threaten her eyes.
Across the room...
Victoria realized the evening had completely slipped out of her control.
And desperation made dangerous people reckless.
She smiled brightly.
"Surely this misunderstanding doesn't deserve so much attention."
Nobody answered.
Not one person.
May you like
Because everyone was watching Vincent Moretti.
Waiting to see what happened next.
