Chapter 2: The Exhibition

Chapter 2: The Exhibition

Two months later, Kendall's design teacher submitted her portfolio to a statewide youth craftsmanship competition.

Neither of us expected much.

Thousands of students entered every year.

The odds were ridiculous.

Then the acceptance letter arrived.

She had not only qualified.

She had become a finalist.

The exhibition was held in Phoenix.

Hundreds of visitors attended.

Professional designers.

Business owners.

Artists.

Investors.

People who understood talent when they saw it.

Kendall displayed a new wooden chest.

Larger.

Stronger.

More beautiful than the one Gage destroyed.

On the inside lid she had engraved a single sentence:

"Some things break. Some people rebuild."

Visitors stopped to read it.

Again and again.

Many asked about its meaning.

She never told the full story.

She simply smiled.

And let the work speak.

By noon, three galleries had requested meetings.

By three o'clock, a furniture manufacturer offered her a summer apprenticeship.

By five, she won first place.

I watched her stand on stage holding the award.

Confident.

Proud.

Unshaken.

The same girl who had stood bleeding in a backyard two months earlier.

That night, as we celebrated at dinner, my phone buzzed.

A message from Gage.

The first one I had opened since everything happened.

It was only six words.

"I lost the shop today."

Nothing else.

No excuses.

No blame.

No requests.

Just the truth.

For a long time, I stared at the message.

Then I put the phone away.

Some lessons can only be learned after the rescue never comes.

And Gage was finally learning his.
