Chapter 2: The Truth Hidden for Eight Years

Chapter 2: The Truth Hidden for Eight Years

The next morning, Eleanor brought Emily to her penthouse overlooking Central Park.

The girl carried only a small backpack.

Everything she owned fit inside it.

Eleanor couldn't stop looking at her.

The shape of her smile.

The color of her eyes.

The way she tilted her head when she thought.

Pieces of Sophia seemed to live inside her.

That evening, Emily handed Eleanor a sealed envelope.

“My mother said I could only give this to you.”

Eleanor's hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Sophia's handwriting.

The sight alone nearly broke her.

She began reading.

Eleanor,

If you're reading this, then I'm gone.

I know you probably still hate me.

But before I leave this world, I need you to know the truth.

I never betrayed you.

Eleanor froze.

Tears immediately blurred the page.

The evidence that destroyed us was fabricated by your business rivals. By the time I discovered it, you had already pushed me away.

I wanted to come back.

I tried.

But then I learned I was pregnant.

Eleanor stopped breathing.

Her eyes moved to the next line.

Emily is your daughter.

The letter slipped from her fingers.

Across the room, Emily looked up.

“What happened?”

Eleanor stared at the child.

The child.

Her child.

The daughter she never knew existed.

Eight years stolen.

Eight birthdays missed.

Eight years of scraped knees, bedtime stories, and first days of school.

Gone forever.

Eleanor crossed the room in seconds.

She dropped to her knees.

And wrapped her arms around Emily.

The little girl froze.

Then whispered the question she had carried her entire life.

“Are you really my mom?”

Eleanor broke down completely.

“Yes.”

The word came out through sobs.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

Emily's small arms wrapped around her.

And for the first time in years, neither of them felt alone.
