Chapter 1: The Name She Never Stopped Whispering

Chapter 1: The Name She Never Stopped Whispering

The alley fell silent.

Only the distant hum of traffic and the rustle of autumn leaves filled the air.

The woman stared at the boy as tears blurred her vision.

It couldn't be.

It was impossible.

Yet those eyes...

Those same crystal-blue eyes she had kissed every night before bed.

Those same eyes that had disappeared eight years ago.

"My... my name is Sarah," she whispered, barely able to breathe. "What's your name?"

The boy tightened his grip around the sandwich.

"They call me Noah."

Her heart nearly stopped.

That was his name.

The name she had given her firstborn.

"Noah..." she repeated, her voice breaking.

The little girl looked back and forth between them.

"Mom... why are you crying?"

Sarah reached forward with trembling hands but stopped inches from the boy's face.

"I lost my son during the warehouse fire."

Noah frowned.

"I don't remember much."

His voice was quiet.

"There was smoke... loud noises... then a man carried me away."

Sarah felt the world spinning.

The authorities had searched for weeks after the fire.

They had found no body.

Eventually everyone assumed the little boy had died.

Everyone...

Except his mother.

Every birthday she baked him a cake.

Every Christmas she wrapped one extra present.

Every night she whispered goodnight to an empty room.

And now...

He was sitting in front of her.

Dirty.

Hungry.

Alone.

Sarah wrapped him in the tightest embrace she had ever given anyone.

"I never stopped looking for you."

Noah stood frozen.

No one had hugged him like that in years.

Slowly...

May you like

Very slowly...

He hugged her back.
