The little girl stood on trembling legs, clutching his hands as if they were the only solid thing in the world. Her father rushed forward. "Emily!" He wrapped his arms around her before she could lose her balance. She laughed through tears.
“Stay away from my daughter.”
The father's voice never rose.
It didn't have to.
Every conversation in the ballroom died beneath the glittering chandeliers.
A barefoot boy stood motionless a few feet from the girl in the wheelchair, one hand still suspended in the air where he'd instinctively reached for her.
Dust stained his cheeks.
His oversized shirt hung loosely from his thin frame.

The cuffs of his torn pants stopped above his ankles, exposing feet that looked painfully out of place against the polished marble floor.
Slowly, he lowered his hand.
"I won't hurt her," he said, his voice calm and almost apologetic.
The little girl looked up at him.
Her pink dress rested neatly across her motionless legs.
She carried the exhausted eyes of a child who had spent far too many years hearing what she would never be able to do.
The boy turned to her father.
"May I ask her something?"
The man hesitated.
His jaw tightened.
Then, after a long breath, the girl gave the smallest nod.
The boy never looked away from her.
"Do you want to try?"
Silence swallowed the ballroom.
The girl's fingers gripped the wheelchair so tightly her knuckles turned white.
Fear filled her eyes.
So did hope.
Her father whispered, barely able to force out the words.
"Please... don't."
But she had already made her choice.
She reached for the boy's hand.
He took it carefully, supporting hers with both of his as though it were the most precious thing in the room.
Her arms pushed against the chair.
Her body trembled violently.
Her legs shook beneath her weight.
For one terrifying second, she nearly collapsed.
The boy caught her before she could fall.
A sharp gasp echoed through the crowd.
The father's breath stopped.
His daughter...
Standing.
For the first time in years.
His eyes flooded with tears.
"How...?"
The little girl looked at him through trembling smiles and quiet sobs.

The boy answered in a whisper that somehow carried through the silent ballroom.
"Because she asked me to come."
