Chapter 1: The Recording

Chapter 1: The Recording

Every eye in the room fixed on the small remote in Harper's hand.

Bennett frowned.

"Harper... what is that?"

The little girl swallowed nervously.

"A projector remote."

My stomach tightened.

"A projector?"

Harper nodded.

"Grandma kept having meetings in her office this week. She always told me not to go inside."

She hesitated.

"But one day she forgot to lock the door."

The room remained silent.

Harper pointed toward the television above the fireplace.

"I found a camera connected to the TV."

Bennett stared.

"What kind of camera?"

Harper reached into her pocket again and pulled out a tiny flash drive.

"This one."

The parents exchanged confused looks.

I took the flash drive from her carefully.

"Sweetheart, where did you get this?"

Her answer made my blood run cold.

"Grandma was deleting videos."

Bennett's face darkened.

"What videos?"

Harper looked down.

"The videos of people crying."

A chill swept through the room.

Bennett immediately connected the flash drive to the television.

Within seconds, a video appeared.

The first clip showed Evelyn standing in her office while speaking with a local charity director.

She smiled politely until the woman left.

Then Evelyn laughed.

"Those children should be grateful for whatever scraps they get."

The room erupted in gasps.

Another video followed.

This time Evelyn was speaking about several family members.

Including us.

Including Harper.

"She's too sensitive."

"Children need humiliation."

"Fear creates obedience."

One recording after another exposed the same ugly truth.

The elegant grandmother everyone admired in public was very different behind closed doors.

The final recording stopped the room entirely.

Evelyn sat at her desk speaking on the phone.

"I don't care if Harper cries."

She laughed.

"That child needs to learn her place."

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Not one person.

Because there was nothing left to defend.
